    K IN G MISS MEETING
HELD THURSDAY
All’s Weil for 1909
QThe truth of this ¿fatement is borne out
not only by the present condition, but by
indications which positively cannot be
ignored. QWe have no complaint to
make with the year 1908. for certainly
our business has prospered. The out
look for 1909 is very favorable; confidence
is returning with lightning speed and we
know of no reason why the coming year
should not prove to be a banner year for
business.
QWe wish you a Happy and Prosperous
New Year.

WHERE IGNORANCE IS B L IS S .
T h e Albauy Democrat mau e x
poses his iguorauce on the Lane
couuty divisiou proposition in a
late issue o f his paper when he
says:
“ Cottage G rove people are plan
ning to have a uew couuty with
Cottage Grove as the county seat,
which suggests the reason for the
chauge. Lane is a loug couuty.
I f there shall be any division the
proper thing will be to divide the
couuty from north to south. Meat
of these county divisions are for
the purpose of securing the ad
vantages offered a couuty seat
W hen that is the only reason they
should always be opposed. That
is uot what couuty scats are for
aud there should be higher motives
than th is."
The Democrat matt then admits
that he "know s nothing about
this proposition,'' which is evident
from his nonsensical argument. It
is the Bohemia miniug district, the
Coast Fork and Pass Creek caityou
timber and lumber interests which
are cut in twain by the Lane and
Douglas bouudary line,
which
"suggests the reason” for this
plausible movement aud uot atty
particular ambitiou ou the part o f
Cottage ( ‘. rove to become a county
seat. The citizens o f South Lane
county have tried to secure ICgis

county in order to avoid a world
of legal tcchuecalities, inconveni
ence aud extra expense iu devel
opment proceedings, but have met
with failure, so uow, it is proposed
to form this section into a new
county.
I f you cannot write intelligently
south Laue, but they admit that if
the proposition is carried to an
initiative vote the measure will
probably carry, so those Eugene
aud Roseburg citizens who have
beeu playing the “ dog in the
manger” act for these years— re
fusing to develop the resources of
north Douglas and south Lane or
provide assistence for others to do
so, will have to take their med
icine, agree upou au amicable

promoters o f the new county, or
the measure will certainly be
submitted to au initiative vote
