t THE CHILDREN OF BELGRADE.
) Modern history’ bus Its “ children’s
crusade’’—the crusade o f the children
o f Belgrade.
The children’s crusade of the mid
dle nges was warlike for the recovery
o f the holy sepulcher; the children’s
crusade at Belgrade was against war.
Recently Austria annexed Bosnia
and Uerzegovlna. The Jingo putrlots
o f Kervla sent up a howl for war.
Such a war meaut the ruin of Servln.
The crown prince, the most dissolute
prince In Europe, celebrated the war
spirit by getting drunk and lashing
people in the streets with his whip.
A hideous blood detnaud filled Bel
grade.
The people there hare learned they
have little to gain by political changes,
nnd they are tired of being killed to
please princes.
It was the women yvbo acted.
They would not let their husbands
be butchered without protest, but
knew the swashbucklers would not
hesitate to kill them nlso If they
marched.
But the children!
Soldiers would not dare slaughter
the children. And so the boys nnd
girls were organised and drilled. Ban
ners were made and lines o f march
outlined.
On the very day when the crown
prince made his graud stand ultima
tum, saying to the minister, “ Remem
ber you speak from 300,000 bayonets!”
—on that very day the children o f Bel
grade marched.
They came from all directions hito
the great square, singing and parrying
banners Iiearing the legend:
