7t remarkable, scientific treatment has been
found which increases the w eight o f scrawny or
thin people, puts flesh on those who hare been thin
for years, whether from disease or from natural
tendency; on those who by heary eating, dieting or
other methods, have in rain tried to get fat; on those

N the last couple of years the hand em
broidery craze has been spreading un
til now every woman who cares to
make a good appearance, without being e x
travagant, appreciates these dainty little
touches to her garments which hand em
broidery adds. T h e work itself is very fas
cinating, and many a dull and tedious hour
during the winter months can be spent very
profitably on this kind of work, and any
I
one can render themselves proficient in this
kind of needle craft with due persistence
and a little time. N o wardrobe is complete
nowadays without one or tw o pieces of
clothing bearing this evidence of daintiness,
and to make everything as simple as pos
sible we are offering our readers of this
page a pattern which can be very easily
transferred to any kind of fabric or wood,
and which should appeal to every economi
cal woman, in the fact that it would make a
clear, clea n -cu t pattern tw elve or more
times. W e will he pleased to furnish our
readers with these patterns for the sum of
ten cents in stamps o r coin, and would be
glad to have them give it a try-out and see
if it is not the most convenient they have
ever used, as well as the most economical.

B H E N you look at the Eastern
sky in the early evening ia N o
vember you will notice a small
group o f stars covering a space a little
greater than that occupied by tbe new
moon. A ll are intensely white, but they
are o f low magnitude for the most part
and seem to shine through a kind o f veil
o f suffused light.
There are six stars
readily visible to the naked eye on a
clear night.
Persons o f exceptionally
good eyesight may see from one to five
more. There is an ancient legend which
was current among the Greeks that the
Pleiades were seven sisters, wtjo fo r their
goodness and beauty were placed among
the stars
One o f them, however, loved
a mortal and. in consequence, retired
abashed from view. Hence, no more than
six afterward were risible. H o w this le-
end originated would require more space
or discussion than may be given here.
It is enough to say that those persons
who declare that they can see the seventh
star are by no means agreed as to which
is the star o f the several hovering on tbe
edge o f naked-eye visibility. T h ey often
still are called the Seven Sisters. A good
opera glass will show about twenty stirs.

O p p o s it e
One star, brighter than the rest, is named
Alcyone.
A small telescope will show additional
stars, until, in the great observatory tele
scope-, no less than two thousand are to
be seen. Observations begun more than
sixty years ago and patiently followed,
showed, when about fifty years had passed,
that there .was an actual association among
the star*, that is, that they are revolving
about each other. The displacement was
o f the very slightest after those years, so
slight, in fact, that it could not be meas
ured. answering to what is called, in
chemistry, a trace. It is clear from this
that the evolution must take a vast period
o f time, numbering tens o f thousands o f
years. W hen we reflect further on the
giant masses o f these distant suns and re
flect that even at a distance o f thousands
o f millions from each other, the revolu
tionary movements most be many miles a
second, we may gain some idea o f the stu
pendous scale on which is constructed this
object which glitters as an ornament to
our autumn skies. The whole group, or
at least a great part o f it, is wrapped in
glow in g hydrogen. The name Pleiades,
notwithstanding the pretty legend, is de
rived from Greek plrion ‘sail," from the
fact that the easily recognized group was
o f great use to the sailors in those davs

before the magnetic compass. From the
earliest days they were noted and many
religious observances marked fheir appear
ance in the evening sky. The H allow e’en
observances and, stranger still, the date
we have chosen fo r our Novem ber elec
tions, may be traced to the ancient regard
fo r the Pleiades.
T h e Pleiades belong to the constella
tion Tarus, the second constellation o f
the zodiac. Follow in g them, at about an
hour's interval, is the sister group, known
as the Hyades. This is a V-shaped figure,
having at the end o f one arm the great
red star Aldeharan.
The Hyades were
sisters o f the Pleiades, according to the
ancient legend, and were foster-mothers
to Bacchus, after the death o f his own
mother. Aldebaran is receding from ns
at the rate o f thirty miles a second, but
being already more than a hundred mil
lion miles away from us, its rate o f reces
sion will not make any difference in ap
pearance fo r very many thousands o f
years. The star next to Aldebiran is one
o f those rarities, a naked-eve double.
That is, it appears as a single star on o r
dinary occasions, but on exceptionally
clear nights it is shown as a pair o f glit
tering stars very close together.
The
whole group is extremely beautiful and
interesting and well repays study.
