Thanksgiving Fantasticals
November
N New York City on Thanksgiving
Days it is the custom for boys to
associate themselves m small
groups, and. wearing masks, usually
formed of the grotesque false faces
found in the shops and the further addi
tion o f suits as ragged and disreputable-
looking as possible, to set forth on a
begging expedition. They ring door-
hells and silently hold forth their
hands in expectation o f what they may
receive. This may be a penny or other
small coin, an apple, bun. nuts, or what
ever the donor may choose to give. In
some neighborhoods the custom becomes
a nuisance on account o f boys who range
extensive districts in purely mercenary
spirit, but where the original custom is
kept o f merely canvassing their home
neighborhood, it is not unpleasing. The
money collected, as well as »be eatables,
go to make a supplementary feast for the
youthful forager*, though where they find
room to stow it after the regulation
Thanksgiving dinner is hard to under
stand In the outlying districts, where
vacant lots are still to be found, it is a
custom to make fires and roast potatoes,
which the young rascals who have just
come from a turkey dinner sit down and
eat as if they never before had eaten in
their lives.
It is probable that the custom originated
in colonial times and that the first dis
guises were those of Indians. Any kind
of grotesque now serves and the variety
of disguise is endless. *
H E ancient year began with March,
so that November was the ninth
month. The name conies from
Latin norem, nine. When Julius Caesar
reformed the calendar to make the year
begin with January. November, of course,
became the eleventh month. Originally
it had thirty-one days, as had all the
odd months. When the Roman senate,
with an excess o f servility, named Aug
ust after Emperor Augustus, they could
not bear that so great an emperor should
have so short a month. Therefore they
changed it to thirty-one days and then
changed all the remaining months of the
year, so that the alternation should be
restored as nearly as possible. And that
is why every school hoy must learn that
“ Thirty days hath November.”
I
T
W here there are only a few cabbages
they may be kept for some time by
placing them head down in a trench
with the roots just above the ground.
When the weafher grow s cold, the roots
may be covered with soil or litter.
