part to divide Lane county. Just
where it is proposed to run the line
is not known, but it is probable
that the matter will likely engage
the attention of the next session of
the legislature. If the county is
ever cut in two, it should be by a

Great and growing industries,
business interests and the rapidly

Lane and Douglas county line, all
demand the formation o f a new

Douglas and southern portion of
Lane, the north line o f the new
county to run east and west be

the southern boundary to run east

W hat chance has a youug man
to rise in the employment o f a

frequently asked. O f course it
depends largely
on the young
man; hut according to a statement:
recently sent out by the Pennsyl

seven of the eighty-five principal
officers of the company started at
the bottom and worked up. A
fact like this is worth many v o l
umes o f theorizing on the subject.

RAILROAD
WORK
TO RESUME SOON
-------- -
A . J. Barclay, assistant chief
railroad engineer, who has charge
of construction work o f the Drain-
Coos Bay railroad, met with the
county court at Roseburg
last
week on some county road busi
ness.
Mr. Barclay has made satisfac
tory settlement with the owners of
the laud for right o f way for the
mile or so of new county road
running from Drain on the west
side o f Elk creek to intersect with
the old road near the Palmer saw
mill site. About X of this new
road was completed by the S. P.
Co. two years ago. Mr. Barclay
informs us that work will lie re
sumed on this work in the near
future and rushed to completion.
This will prove of great benefit
to everybody in this section, as it
w ill cut out several o f the most
dangerous railway crossings in the
state aud besides it will be a much
better road than the old one.
It is our guess that work w ill be
humming on the new Coos Bay
railroad also lie fore many more
weeks roll by.— Drain N’ onpareil.
Am ong those who visited Eu
gene Saturday and witnessed the
big football game lietween the U ni
versity o f ( )regon and the U niver
sity o f Washington were W . H.
Abrams, Chas. Cochran, Hugh
Currin, Misses Gertrude Palmer
ami Ethel Moore.
J, I). Cochran w ill set out a ten
acre Italian prune orchard on his
little farm next fall. This orchard
will be set out on a tract east of
the railroad opposite his residence.
