A Leader representative visited
the site of the new fruit dryer and
cannery this week just south of
the Brown Lumber Co’s sawmill,
and found the carpenters busy lay
ing the joists for the first floor
which will be four feet above
ground or on a level with a freight
car floor aud wagon bed. A fine
concrete foundation has been laid
40xS0 feet with numerous center
piers. A coucrete foundation for
the drier furnace 1 2x35 feet has
also been laid. The building will
be three stories high and modern
in all of its departments. It is be
ing constructed from the best of
materials and the evaporator will
be of the latest improved hot-air
type. The vegetable and fruit
canning equipment will probably
not be added until next year, but
ample provisions are being made
for its installation later. This will
be one of the largest and best fruit
drying plants in the I'pper W il
lamette valley when completed.
Mr. J. A . Ackerman, late of Idaho
is boss carpenter and is doing good,
conscientious work, and more men
will be put to work as soon as ma
terials can be had in greater quan
tities. Mr. Henstnore, the pro
moter of the enterprise, is on the
ground and is personally supervis
ing the work.
Cottage Grove is very fortunate
in securing such an enterprise,
which however, will be of even
more benefit to the farmer and
fruit grower of this community
than to the town. W e understand
Mr. Densmore is receiving appli
cations from fruit growers about
Creswell and other outside points
to dry fruit for them from their or
chards. Now let the farmers and
fruit growers bring in their fruit
products and the drier will do the
rest this fall.
