Salem Brewers Circular.
Editors Cottage Grove Leader:—
About 2000 circular letters from
the Salem Brewery Association
were distributed in the Cottage
Grove ] lost office Tuesday. The
circular was headed ‘ ‘ Voice o f the
church not for prohibition.”
The
brewers are liable to change their
conclusion
after next Monday.
The circular continues, “ In the
place o f the saloon you
have
easily doubled the number
in
blind pigs,” Not in Cottage Grove
gentlemen! Then it says, "dru n k
enness has vastly
increased.”
Nay, nay! Mr. Brewer you are
off again. "P eop le will buy and
drink even more liquor in dry
precincts.”
What are you going
to do about it when tile law is
passed aud enforced prohibiting
the sale o f liquor in dry precincts,
Mr. Brewer? "Prohibition will ruin
the hop and barley business.”
Neither have ever been found very,
very profitable in this part o f the
state, sj> this w on't scare the
farmer much. "Prohibition will
rob thousands o f men, women aud
children of a livelihood.”
The
saloon does the same tiling and
more; it sends fathers to the jieni-
tentiary or drunkards grave, moth
ers to the insane asylum or poor
house and children to the care of
benevolent societies.
The circular says, "lo c a l option
engenders neighborhood
strife,
quarrels and feuds.” The saloon
engenders quarrels, fighting, sui
cide, blood shed aud murder.
"W o u ld it not be better to license
respectable men and conduct only
respectable saloons?”
Both are impossibilities: respect- i
ability and the saloon business is j
not on speaking terms.
The brewers talk about their
elevating the legitimate saloon.
They have never done it and never
would do it, no, not in a thousand
years. They say
"th e
saloon
makes business.”
O ff again, the |
saloon only follows after business |
aud goes where the dollars are, tlie
same as does.the gambler. There
is not one sound argument that
can be advanced in favor o f the
saloon. Cottage Grove has proven
that she is better off without them
and their male and female para
sites. Eugene has done likewise,
and the county is going to stand
by its action of two years ago and
keep out the saloons, and its offi
cers will, take care of the "b lin d j
pigs.”
