an enormous Impetus to what may be
called the graphic reporting o f news.
Through no fault o f the distinguished

It Is always a questionable practice
to crop newly broken sod In a dry year.
The sod usually contains but little
moisture, aud the process o f breaking
causes one to lose an appreciable por
tion o f It, says a Colorado bulletin.
Suggestive plan : Plow sod land not leas
than three nor more than five Inches
deep, turning sod down as flat ns possi
ble, and thus prevent Its drying out too
soon. Follow as closely with disc har
row as practicable, aud this with some
form o f packer, either single or double
roll. This w ill level the sod land above,
and firm the soil lu the lower portion
o f the furrow slice, restoring the capil
larity where plowing has arrested It.
T M * firmed under-surface soil is thus
ensMod to draw moisture from below
and give good, normal root develop
ment. Follow up the packer with eith
er an acme or a good smoothing har
row to produce a good earth mulch to
arrest surface capillarity and check
evai>orntion o f soil moisture.
Follow
with the seeder. AU small grain should
be drilled In with a press-wheeled drill,
followed up with a good spike-toothed
or smoothing harrow. It Is almost nec
essary that all tillage operations on
sod be with the furrows rather than
across them to avoid tearing up the sod
and drying out your seed bed. Do not
seed broadcast Make each tillage op
eration thorough— plowing,
disking,
firming, barrowing and seeding.
When the new crop Is up, cross bar
row to prevent tbs formation o f m
crust, aud givin g the young crop a
cultivation. Follow up each rain with
a good harrowing as long as character
o f crop w ill permit.
