For Hunters Oregon State Schools Rapidly Reach ing out to Secure the Best For Students. Practice as well as theory is not only desirable but absolutely neces sary in fitting tor the responsibili ties to be borne by the younger generation now preparing them selves to enter the great field of modem structural building and me chanical engineering. Studentselig- able to our state o f Oregon institu tions have special advantages that all do not realize, nor does every body kuow that at these schools they can. have the strength, upon which the value depends, deter mined of material that they might have for market it its worth was proven. At the University of Oregon in Flugeue there is a testing plant for the determination of timber and ce ment. The station is provided and sustained partly by the state and partly by the government. That our universities and col leges are well looked after is shown by tho -fact that only four other schools in the United .States are fa vored with these advantages;— They are Perdue Uuiversity, Yale College, The Uuiversity of California and the University of Washington. The equipment of the Eugene station consists of a testing macnine of 200,000 pounds capacity, a smaller machine of 3o,ooo pounds, a convtrtable saw and a planer, all operated by an electric motor. For the government work it is sufficient for the needs, but the classes re quire that there should be several of the 3o,ooo-pouud machines for regular labratory work. The importance o f the engineer ing equipment to the University of Oregon student is readily deter mined from the fact that nearly half the students are either taking engineering as a major subject or are including the work in another course. The timber station has proved of especial importance to the lumber ing interests of the Northwest. A series of tests just completed have been sent to Washington and will be published in pamphlet form. The results o f the tests will show that the Oregon Red Fir is equal in strength to the famous yellow pine of the Southern States. At the Oregon Agricultural C ol lege at Corvallis a new automatic cement testing machine has been added to the geological department. During the past year so tnauy in quines have been made concerning limestone deposits and their adapta bility for cement making that it was deemed necessary to add the new machine to the equipment. Tho department is prepared to test any sample of cement fur strength, or any limestone for use in making ce ment and to give necessary direc tions for for proper mixing of the ingredients. W e believe every applicant for a hunting license should be compelled to pass an examination. For in stance if he could answer the fo l lowing questions to the satisfaction of the county judge, then he should be treated as an American citizen, otherwise as an anarchist : Are you married, insane or both?
