COTTAGE GRÒ E LEADER V O L. X V I I I NO. 31 C O T T A G E G R O V E , O REG O N, S A T U R D A Y , NOVEMBER 17. 1906. YOUNG BOYS SENTENCED Thos. Reeves and Hugh Saxon Mur derers of Wm. Powell go to Penitentiary. Friday morning Thos Reeves and Hugh Saxon, the two boys who murdered W in. Powell «t the bridge between Cottage Grove and Latham last summer, were brought into court and were sentenced by Tudge Harris, Hugh Saxon, the acknowledged murderer of Wm. Powell getting i5 yeats in the pen itentiary, while Thomas Reeves, the elder of the two boys, got an indeterminate sentance of from 1 to 15 years in the penitentiary. The boys were indicted by the Grand Jury on a charge of murder in the second dogree, to which they plead not guilty. Later the Grand Jury permitted them to appear on a charge of nfr.ti slaughter to which they plead guilty thus avoiding the formality ot a triad. The jury reco-m mended the latter charge on ac count of the evidence aud also on account o f the yontbfnlneas o f the boys. At the time oi the preliminary trial Thos. Reeves, the elder o f the two hoys made a written confession stating that he kil'ed the old mnu, although the old man’ s dying state ment was that the younger of the boys shut him and before the Grand Jury young Saxon finally admitted that he was the guilty one. every portion o f his makeup. The build of bis head, the cast of his eye, his walk— all, in ffcct indicate his natural tendency towards crime — his dominance over his elder companion Reeves, whom he com pelled to confess himself the mur derer, in fear of Saxon implicating him in other criminal deeds, the markabio confession given by- Reeves, at his companions instance, all bring out the shrewd, calculate ing mind o f the boy, who however did not take into account the possi- bility of the old man making a statement that might catch him iu a fatal grip. His punishment— 15 years in a penitentiary among hardened criminals mostly— will bring him out again into the world at about thirty, a most powerful foe to the safety and well being o f bis fellew man. Cfty Should Have Fire Alarm System. E. C. Gamble, agent of one of the most modern fire alarm system is in town, endeavoring to induce the City Council to install his fire alarm system.
