    TEMPERANCE NOTES
Wiie Guys Change Their Tactics.
Onr Boys The following extract
is taken from the speech of one ol
the officers of the Ohio State Liquor
League some years ago:
''The success of our business is
largely upon the creation of an ap
petite for drink. Meu who drink,
like others, will die; and if no new
appetite is created our counters will
be empty our children will go
hungry. The open field for crea
tion of appetite is the boys. After
men are grown, habits are seldom
changed in this regard. It will be
Leedful then for missionary work to
be done amoug the boys, nickels ex
pended in treats to the boys will re
turn in dollars to your tills after
the appetites hate been formed.
Above all things create appetites!"
Bt'SCII FAVORS CLOSING
Adolphe Buscb, the millionaire
brewer, of St. Louis, was quoted
in an interview here today with say
ing he favored local option aud par
tial Sunday closing.
"I am in lavor of local optiou,M
said Mr. Busch. iti reply to the
question of a newspaper man. "If
a saloon is obnoxious to a commun
ity it should be voted out. As to
Sunday closing, I have a plan that
should meet with universal approv
al. It is this: Close the saloon
from midnight Saturday uutil 2
o'clock Sunday afternoon, and then
let them open. That would give
everyone an opportunity to go to
church in the morning."
The widespread prohibition move
ment was viewed with some alarm
by Mr. Busch. "It's spreading all !
over the south," he said, "and even
Oklahoma went prohibition. That
cost me a million dollars in cold
cash."
BREWERS TO AID TEM1KRANCE.
"Ameiica's foremost brewers are
prepared to join with reasonable
temperance reformers in a move
ment to abolish the dive, the drunk
ard, the saloon that caters to
women and children and every sort
that does not obey the strict letter
of National and state legislation."
This, in substance, is the result
of a cenfereuce between represen
tatives of the great brewing inter
ests in this city. Mo secret is made
by these interests that the wave of
prohibition which, in local option
or other forms, has swept over the
south, and is making deep inroads
in the north, inspires their move
ment They aver that it will do no
permanent barm to them, but that
on the contrary, it will give them
an opportunity that they have long
sought, that of taking ktheir pro
duct away from dive-keepers and
habitual drunkards.
New York advices state that a
concerted fight against the temper
ance movement will be made by the
liquor interests of the country,
special attention being given to
Maine, North Dakota aud Oklaho
ma. The success of the liquor meu
is doubtful aud much will depend
on their methods. If they get busy
and prosecute the first saloon keep
er accused of selling liquor to a
minor or a chronic drunk, and im
mediately kick iufo retirement those
of their rank who attempt to be
come poli'ical dictators, they will
have made a good start. Had a
policy of this kind been inaugurat
ed tweuty .ears ago, the legitimate
liquor trade would not now be pay
ing such a heavy penalty for the
shortcomings of some of its follow
ers. Oregonian.
