Cottage Grove is going right
uheatl, holiday or no holiday. No
one haa suffered; we are favored
with cheerful, solid business men
that "knoweth in whom he has
placed his trust." No serious in
convenience has bsen experienced
here. Improvements are the talk
of the dny. Even the ladies are
taking a hand with the slogan, "a
clean city, a pure city, an attractive
city, a big city." No city in the
state can boast of a greater pros
perity than is shared by our man
ufacturers find farmers or a class of
merchants and bankers with
stronger financial standing or great
er faith in one another and a grand
harmony iu the building up of our
small city cf great and unsurpassed
resources and possibilities.

HELD UNDER AUSPICES OF
Two hundred and thirty new
people found homes in Oregon
every day from September 1st to
October 31st as a result of the colo
nist one-way tickets and through
the help of the newspapers the pop
ulation and wealth of the state has
been enormously increased. The
exact number of tickets eold as re
ported by Mr. William McMurray,
General Pasaenger Agent on the
Harriman lines, for I9O7 was 13,
753. For the same time in I906 it
was 8890, an increase of 4863 or
about sixty per cent. This of
course does not include tickets sold
to Oregon over the Canadian Pa
cific, Northern Pacific, Great North
em, or any other roads whose
tickets come around by way of
Puget Sound. The Oregon Devel
opment League has made the colo
nist rates the chief feature of its
work. The Portland Commercial
Club circulated 400,000 leaflets with
this low rate its central feature, and
probably no advertising ever done
by auy state in the Union has
ihowu better results. The rates
will be on again during March and
April 1008.

Railroad News.
A canvass ot the business houses,
wholesale and retail, as well as the
factories, proves that business has
gotten back to normal conditions.
Many report an increase over last
year. There has not been a failure
on a suspension of a single business
house or factory in this city. The
people of the state can depend up
on the newspapers of Portland giv
ing them the facts and before they
get these facts they can depend up
on any news contrary to the above
statement being merely rumors.
The words of Mr. Theodore B,
Wilcox, president of the Portland
Flouring mills, in an address be
fore 1H0 business men at the Com
mercial Club Tuesday night, when
he announced: "The Hurry is over.
Will be in the market buying wheat
and paying gold for it tomorrow,"
met with a more enthusiastic recep
tion than any remark that has been
made in this city in many years.
The Oregon Good Roads Associ
ation which convened at the Port-
That James J. Hill is makinS ef
forts to construct a railroad line
from Portland to San Francisco was
made certain in the minds of rail
road men with the arrival in Port
land several days ago of 11. . Gra
ham, who is in the Rose City for
the purpose f instituting suit to
recover possession of the Coos Bay;
Roseburg & Eastern Railway &
Navigation Company, operating a
Hue of road about 30 miles long be
tween Marshfield and Myrtle Point.
Mr. Graham lives in New York
and was general mauager of the
Coos B iy road in 18!)8, when J. D.
Spreckels' Bros. fc Co. took force
tul possesHi'on of the railway with a
squad of men armed with Winches
ter rifles, to satisfy a private debt
owing the bi sugar man by Gra
ham, amounting to j5"23,000 due on
a promissory note. '
fOI,l) TO SOI'TIIKRN I'Ai'IKir
The road was placed in the hands
of a receiver and was Anally sold
last year to the Southern Pacific
railroad The receiver was dis
charged last July and Mr. Graham
at once commenced to get busy to
gain possession of the road.
The nature of the action which
he will bring is to start a suit either'
in the United States circuit court
or the state circuit court at Marsh
field for an accounting of the rail
road's condition and lor the restore
ation of possession of tho line, with
all ot its corporate property. Mr.
Graham and his attorneys have not
decided in which court to institute
proceedings, the only reason for
taking the suit into the state court
would be to have the action lie
nearer the facts than they would in
the federal court in Portland.
I'AKT CI- TI!.SS 'ONTIN JCNTA I, LINE
Graham contends in defense of
his action that ho was never given
a day iu court by .Spreckles. lie!
claims that the big San Francisco
capitalist swooped down on tlie
company's ofti cm at Marshfield while
ho was in New York and drove all
the ofli'-c employes out of the build
ing nt the muzzles of Winchesters,
lie says that he realized the futility
of bringing Sprfcklcs to au account
ing at that time and waited until
now in order t foitify his position.
Railroad men look upon Gra
ham's propose'! action (is an at
tempt on the part of Hill to gain a
strong connecting link in a line
from Portland to San Francisco.
Tho Coos Bay, l!-oburir A' Eastern
IJail'.vay it Navigation company ex
tends up to the head of Navigation
on the Coquill" ii"cr and runs
through one of the richest valleys
in the country. It is in reality the
small prut of a transcontinental
system that is considered one of the!
most feasible yet broached for tlie j
advancement and development of I
the Pacific cast. j
That the line is one over which i
tho Hill and Harriman interests will'
fight to the last ditch is further at
tested to by the fact that the com-
pany h on a paying basis. Another
jthing which premises a hard fight
i between I he 'dg interests is Gra.
ham's dislike for Ifaninvui and
Sprecklcs. Of the latter, the for
cible seizure of the road is hafficient
to show the enmity existing be
tween the two, while Giahain is
said to have developed a dislike for
the Southern Pacific man for sever,
al reasons.
An incident of the Graham
Spreekles feud is recoiled in tho
hearing of the Inter;, tate Commerce
Commission which made a small in
vestigation of tlie Coot Bay line
last spring! Commissioner IYane
wns listening to the evidence) and
asked Mr. Graham if ho did not re-.
gard Spreckles intentions honest. '.
Mr. Graham is reported to have.'
said of the capitalist, "Well, he
