Two hundred and thirty new
people found homes in Oregon
every day from September 1st to
October 31st as a result of the colo
nist one-way tickets and through
the help of the newspapers the pop
ulation and wealth of the state has
been enormously increased. The
exact number of tickets eold as re
ported by Mr. William McMurray,
General Pasaenger Agent on the
Harriman lines, for I9O7 was 13,
753. For the same time in I906 it
was 8890, an increase of 4863 or
about sixty per cent. This of
course does not include tickets sold
to Oregon over the Canadian Pa
cific, Northern Pacific, Great North
em, or any other roads whose
tickets come around by way of
Puget Sound. The Oregon Devel
opment League has made the colo
nist rates the chief feature of its
work. The Portland Commercial
Club circulated 400,000 leaflets with
this low rate its central feature, and
probably no advertising ever done
by auy state in the Union has
ihowu better results. The rates
will be on again during March and
April 1008.

A canvass ot the business houses,

Wilcox, president of the Portland
Flouring mills, in an address be
fore 1H0 business men at the Com
mercial Club Tuesday night, when
he announced: "The Hurry is over.
Will be in the market buying wheat
and paying gold for it tomorrow,"
met with a more enthusiastic recep
tion than any remark that has been
made in this city in many years.

charged last July and Mr. Graham
at once commenced to get busy to
gain possession of the road.
The nature of the action which
he will bring is to start a suit either'
in the United States circuit court
or the state circuit court at Marsh
field for an accounting of the rail
road's condition and lor the restore
ation of possession of tho line, with
all ot its corporate property. Mr.
Graham and his attorneys have not
decided in which court to institute
proceedings, the only reason for
taking the suit into the state court
would be to have the action lie
nearer the facts than they would in
the federal court in Portland.
