incontrovertible proof of the exist
ence of a diabolical plot on the part
ot political enemies ot Mayor I,ane
to blacken his good name, and if
possible drive him from his posi
tion as tlie executive of Portland,
was furnished this morning by the
statcir.eut of A. X. Wills, president
of the city council, that K. K. Rad
diug some six weeks ago had pro
posed to him and Thomas C. Dev
lin, a plan by which Mayor I.ane
could be trapped in his ollico by a
woman. The plan was proposed
by Radding and was turned down
by both Wills and Devlin, accord
ing to the statement of Mr. Wills,
and was evidently taken to other
and more complaisant men.
Councilman Wills is a political
enemy ot Mayor Lane and lias in
the past been opHiscd to him on
many political problems affrctinjj
the government and conduct o( the
city and its affairs. To him, and
to Thomas Devlin, defeated by
Lane for election to the Mayor's
chair, Kadding took his dastardly
plan after weeks of ingratiating ef
fort to make himself friendly nnd
acceptable to the men, and lie
trusted to this political enmity to
secure tbair acceptance and ap
proval. Mr. Devlin confirms the
stateme nt made by Mr. Wills.
