West Coast Mines Company Receives
Returns From a Shipment to the
Tacoma Smelter.
The Went Coast Mines Company
received within a few cents of One
Thousand llollars for a car of con
centrates weighing neatly twenty
tons, last week, The values were
gold, silver, topper and lead. Th;
smelter does not pay for loth lead
und copper when both are contained
in the product of the mine, unless
they are separated, but they pay
for whichever is of the greatest
value. In this ease there was more
value in the copper so the company
received full pay for gold, silver
and copper, losing the lead values.
The rate charged for treatment, al
so transportation charges are rea
sonable, and go to show that Bo
hemia is not nearly so much isolat
ed from a market for its ores as
very much of the home talk would
indicate. It is hoped that this
shipment will be the first of a long
string ol cars to follow from the
West Coast Mines Company and
othe properties in the district.

By Water Seems to be the

Transportation Facilities Falls Far
Short of the Needs-Railroads Prac-
tically Inadequate to Handle the
Commerce of the Count, y. ;
A circular has been issued by the
transportation conirniit'e of the
Portland Chamber of Commerce
outlining the benefits of ocean ship
ments. It is shown that the freight
rate is lower, aud that it is not only
advantageous but economical to
ship by water. Included in the
circular is a long list of the com
modifies that can bo shiipcd more
economically by water than by rail.
Our ag' icultural and commercial
development has been checked by
an unexpected cause. TranspoiU
tion facilities are inadtquaie to
handle our gigantic commerce says
the American Farmer. The rail
roads have been literally swamped.
In many localities grain that should
have been shipped last bill. is dill
in the bin, and manufacturers in
every section of the country are
unablo to get cars with promptness,
and when once loaded theie is no
assurance that they will reach th'ir
destination iu reasonable timo.
Manifestly Ibe congested tratlic
problem has come to stay, if the
production of the country continues
to increase or even remain as it is.
The railroads, for physical reasons,
cannot be depended upon to solve
the problem. Great us it is, our
transportation system falls far short
of the needs. Nor is there any
remedy in sight. In the lust tr-n
years the production ot the northern
two thirds of the interior of this
country has doubled, wi de railroad
facilities in the same time have in
creased only one-eighth. Thcie
are not cars enough, but as tl.e rail
roads well know, even if the num
ber of cars wcis multip.ied, the I i -ficulty
would uot be nu t. Thc:e
are not locomotives enough to -law
a sufficient number of ears to in- et
our transportation needs. There
are uot tracks enough. Moreover,
there is not enough iron nMuufaet
ured iu the Unittd Stntes lo build
the railroad tracks, ears and loco
motives required to provide our
transportation facilities; ami still
further, there is not labor enough
available in the United States to
mine and manufacture the iron in
sufficient quantities to meet our
needs.
Thero is only one remedy in
sight. The only hope for tho future
the only reliance is upon our water
ways. The first highways of man,
what enabled him to get from place
to place, what made civilization
possible, will again have to be
called into service. The rivers
must be brought to the aid of the
railroads and both will b-j needed
to transport the constantly increas
ing commerce of this giant nation.
