school district, load district, incorpor

county purposes are collected.

Section 17. All taxes levied in this
state by the aut hority of the stat or
a municiial coiMtration therein upon
any person or projicrty in this state
shall be collected and jwiid in gold and
silver coin of the I'nited States, and
not otherwise.

Section 18. As between the grantor
and grantee of any land, when there is 1
no express agreement as to which chnll
jtay the taxes that may bo assessed
thereon before tho conveyance, if such
land is conveyed at the tmio or prior to
the date of the warrant authorizing the
collection of such taxes then the irrantoe
shall pay tho same, but if conveyed
after tho date the
grantor shall pay
them.

Linn and Lane Compromise.
Salem At a conference the legisla
tors from Linn and Lane counties in
the state leigslature agreed to a satis-
satisfactory adjustment of the boundary
line lietween those counties. The di-
pitted territory is divided about equally
lietween the two counties. The new
boundary line as agreed upon follows
the divide between the McKenzio and
('alaj)ooia rivers. The division of the
district decided upon is the natural
distribution of the disputed territory,

shed to stove-length fuel. He put in

vicinity of their residences.
The High school has been closed, ow
ing to cold and lack of fuel. Its reop
ening is indefinite. The Northern Pa
cific general offices are suffering from
the lack of fuel, and little work is be
ing done.
The entire North End is without

Snow blocks the railroads and the tem
perature has fallen many degrees. It
is rep uted at the (ireat Northern gen
eral nllice that the mercury registered

the maximum temjxjrature is above 38
degrees below zero. Great Northern
employes are battling against snow
drifts which are 20 to 30 feet high.
The greatest tie-up on the Great
Northern line has occurred in the dis
trict between P.rownimr and Cutbank,
Mont., a distance of about 40 miles.
In this district robiry plows are sent
against the banks without result, and
though jilows are kept going continual
ly it is imjio.ssible to clear the tracks.
The snowfall in the West is greater
than has ever lieen known before. Be
tween the Cascade and the Rocky
mountains, where there is scarcely ever
any snow, drifts are now piled seven
feet high. The Great Northern line
between Kenmare and Thief Iiiver
Falls has been abandoned. Trains
which connect with the Canadian Pa
cific railroad trains at Moose Jaw have
lieen delayed badly.
On the lines where traffic is at all
possible the trains are run with three
and even four engines and jireeeded by
rotary jdows, but even then have been
delayed from one to three days.
