Wednksdav, Deo. 26. 1006 Georgia Works for Reform. Tbe following editorial which oc-eur-fs in a prominent eastern paper is worthy of careful thought. A ;.'reat movement is on foot that will do much to correct the wrongs of the past. Last September the newspapers were lull of the accounts of the riots in Atlanta in which about a score of per-ons were killed. Mot of the victims were colored and so far as is known, nil were innocent of the slightest transgression of the law. Taos outbreaks seem to have produced a sobering effect, at !c: st. It is a pleasure to note that not since the Civil war (or especi ullp reconstruction times) has there bt-en such united effort as now to improve all conditions wLich are in volved in the race problem. Recently a prosperous aegroe was anested, charged with the most infamous of crimes, positively iden tified by tbe white woman who ac cused him and was with difficulty taken to jail in Atlanta and saved from lyDchiDg. The white people declared that this was a time to make the wheels of justice moe promptly. Two of the most emi nent toen of the Atlanta bar were selected to prosecute the prisoner and he was given counsel. Before the trial was over the prosecutors were compelled to admit that, io fpite of the hysterics of the woman, the prisoners was innocent. He was acquitted and a few days later the actual criminal confessed his guilt. Every white and colored minister in Georgia sems to be working to secure racial peace. Every promi nent man of both races is aiding in the same direction. Amoug think ii.. men there seems to be nodi- vision ot opinion that the morals , and ethics aud intellect of both j races'must ba elevate ). The stat has appropriated lirge sums of , money for agricultural an i indus trial schools in every Congressional 'district.
