Young Murderers Through Dime
Novels.
(Continued from tirat ng I
thcie until six o'clock, makin? uur
way to Drain where we were cap-
tiued.
Signed
Thom as Rkavi.
The second boy being called tuid
his uarae was Hngh Saxon, aged 16,
boru in Piuo Bluff. Ark. and livid
15 years in Texarkana, Tesas, b it
had been working last for the Port
laud Iron works. When asked if
ho would make any statement he
stated that he would make the same
statement as te other bov, thin
when told that he could waive mak
ing a statement said no would not
make any.
Sho statement ling signed, the
justice statu! that under tne statute
he eouM not Jo other than bind
them over to the circuit court with
out bonds.
Th y were taken to the county
juil by Shi iifT Fislc ou the noon
train.
In a tilk with one of the boys he
stated that for years he had been
reading, all his spare time, dime
novel, and that his mind had got
ten so filled with their stories that it
started him and hi companion like-
wise on their career of crime. He
said ' I luve sat up whole nights
rending cheap detective sto'ie". I
wish there had never letii such
books printed."
The confession made by the el I-
etstboy is a remarkable one. There
is a clear, concise statement from
the time of the crime until their cap
ture, all unnecessary words e'imi
nated, little to vary from, a cire
fully prepared tale, the like of
which would he a hard thing for
any mau to figure o'lt under the
circumstances.
The death of the old man, after
haviui served his country's ling for
four and a half years at the risk ot
his life, to loHe his life at the bauds
of two hoodlums, with whom he
clashed bis four sous, saying "I
have four sous in San Francisco,
just such hoodluniJ as the two loys
who shot me" is sad indeed. True
it retltcts upou himself that he
should have such a worthless fam
ily, but the learful condition is the
same. Murdered, possibly with
out a realization of their crime, by
two boys who wanted his meat, or
as they stated because he started to
draw a knife, which the examina
tion of his effects showed he did not
have.
The statement of Marshal Under
wood before the Cor -"net's jury
that he had been instructed by his
superior officers that men have a
right to carry a weapon in a scab-
bard or bolster and teat for that
reason he did not disarm the hoys
when he held them up, id one that
deserves attentiou. If he had din
armed the boys the crime woul
not have been committed, they had
already threatened persons with
their cuns, thev -carried them in
scabbards underneath their coats,
and consequently concealed. The
law prohibits persons cartying con
cealed weapons, so why shouhi
weapons even if curried in scab
bards, not come under the same
law. A grave charge must lie be-
foie those who issued such an or
der. A weapon is coiceaUd
whether it is. or is not in a seab
oard und id fatill out i f sight. If
this condition continues under such
rash attucks and losses of life will
occur and is time olQcials gave the
marshal other instructions.
