It is too bad that in a town th
sizcof Cottage Grove there are a lot
of hoodlums, who, when they attend
a public meeting do not have
enough sense to behave themselves,
but act like boys of six, who don't
know any better, or as though they
had been brought up in the back
woods instead of a civilized coun
try. Some have tried to offer as an
excuse that the boys did nt know it
was not only impolite and ungentle
manly to interrupt a gathering
with loud talks, whistles and stamp
ing, but we can not believe that
young men of 20 do not have more
braiDrt than that. It may be care
lessness of their annoyance to
others, or thoughtlessness; but the
boys certainly ought to be made to
understand that such things cau uot
be tolerated. Monday evening a
number of the best pieces of music
at the Opera House were interrupted
and the effect lofet, through the dis
turbance raised by a cumber of
young men in the back of tLe hall,
and whose acts led many youDger
boys to follow in the disturbance.
Remember boys, when you go in a
public placft, that Borne people are
there to listen attentively, whether
you are 01 not, aui try to keep
your spirits in obeyance for awlil-.

Outlook Bright for Or.gort Dairymen
The report of tbe dairy section of
the Development League Coaven
tion, submitted by J. W. Bailey,
contains the following:
"A representative body of dairy
men from different parts of the state
was present aud the progress of the
industry during tbe past year and
the prospects of the future were dis
cussed. It was the concensus of
opinion that there has been an in
crease of 25 per cent in the amount
of butter and cheese manufuctured.
The output of butter for the year
l'J05 was ut leabt CjGO.OoO pounds,
and the output of cheese 2,750,000
pounds. Dairymen are making
good profits.
"The acreage of alfalfa has in
creased perhaps 'M per cent in East
ern Oregon. It has proved ft fine,
nutritious food for the dairy cow
and its production costs but little.
In tbe Willamette valley the culture
of alfalf.i i being tried, and thus far
the results have proved more than
satisfactory. If the proposed rail
ways into the Tillamook country,
Coos Bay Klamath Falls and Wal
lowa ure consummated, a great ica
petu will be given the iudcostry.

Friday evcuitikr a number of in-

of Mr and Mrs J. K. l'almer on
Wall street, to surprise their daugh
ter, Mis Gertrude, it leiny, the
vent of the celebration of her
birthday. A pleasant evening was
had by all preseut and later in the
evening the guests were ushered iu
the dining room, where dainty re
freshments were served, after which
departure was taken.
A Surprise.
Saturday evening was one of the
most delightful and inteiestinjj
evenings of the seaoon, at which
time the doors and hospitality ot
Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Walker's home
was open to a company of joung
folks.
The party was given as a surprise
to Mr. Walker and Mr. Auderson,
aDd in accordance with Mis Walker's
and Miss Heleu McGee's anticipa
tion, the company gathered at an
early hour, departing after bushels
of fun and jollification early in the
wee hours of the day.
The guests enjoyed themst hes
lor a lony time in pl.iying the fa
mous game Block, tind tnatiy other
of the leading card rame. A
geography hunting game was n xt
participated in by all presmt.
Small strips of paper were pine 1
about the house containing the
name of towns in the United Stiites
five of each being in a certain state.
Each person with t h -i r cards and
pencils hunted about the house un
til they thought they had the live
correct cities htlotiitig to their
sttte which was given on their cmJ.
After ample time had elapsed, the
cards were gathered up and cor
rected, after which it ws evident
that Miss Tressa Gamut te won a
box of bonbons as first prie and
Herman l'almer a little doll made of
a clothes pin as the booby prie.
Refreshments were served during
tbe entire evening and later to the
surprise of the guests the youu
ladies were ordered into another
room and one by one held out their
hand for the gentlemen to guess as
to who it was. That way partners
for supper were secured, which
moat assuiedly was delightful to
the eyes as well as to the palate
The evening was a great success
and an event which iO'Jg will be re
membered in the annuals of history.
Those present were: Mr. and Mrs.
C. F. Walker and family, Mipes
Tressa Garoutte, Sophie Oiberg,
Mabel Cctfman, Alvadene mid
Helen McGee, Ollie WiJIard, and
Dessie Harms; Messrs. Clyde
Nokes, Orval Taylor, Prof Harvey,
Ernest Sears, Herman Palmer,
Frank Sly, Mr. Anderson, and Fred
Waehlte.
A Musical Treat
On Monday night the DeMos
Lyric Bards rendered a very fine
programme at the Opera house.
Those who have heard them before
know of the many different instru
ments they carry with them, and
on which they so ably perform. To
those who have not heard them it
might be interesting to know that
there were about 20 different iustru
meLts used, piano, violin, base viol,
cello, mandolins, guitars, biujos,
flute, ocarinks, base and snare drums
cornets, horns, tamborins, triangle,
xylophones, Columbian hand bells,
rustic bells and glasses, aud a steel
violin. The most beautiful of the
evenings music, was that in which
the bells were rung, possibly boing
so to manv on account of the music
being t ld funiiliar tunes. An odd
leuture to many was the playing on
the edges of the glasses, and the
playing on a thiu fctrip of steel with
a violin bow. The music was all
very good, but young Muster Her
shel was the man that won the
hearts of all, for he in musical and
full ot fun from the top of his head
to the end of his toes. His direc
tion of tlie orchestra was a sight to
see.

Cow Creek Station, Jan. i3.
Southern Pacific train No. 15, from
San Francisco to Portland, was
wrecked at this place at 10 o'clock,
by running hend on into a large
laud slide.
The train was running under
double head at the time aud iu
rounding the curve came upon the
slide so suddeuly that the brakes
could not prevent a collision.
Head engine No. 21 98, in charge
of Eugineer Tuytou and Fireman
Ted Johusou, was badly battered
up but not derailed. Both engi
neers were slightly injured in the
uc ident.
A special wet-ling train was sent
fiom Portland and another from
liosfcburg, but it will be "daylight
before the track can Le cleared and
tie train sent on to its destination
