Chi- fa Is n very simple (fame Indeed, nnd In Its very simplicity lies the dim elllty whli-h the mithorltles here, lis elsewhere, find lu suppression. It need no iipparatus or "lay-out" nn do roulette, faro nnd other Karnes of rhnnce. It does not even need a pack: of curds or a supply of chips. Simply Judk'fd as n KambllriK frame nnd enticed I nit f,,r the moment that It Is played on the M'lunre, che fa bus Its allurements, for It Is on thnt bnsls n game which every player has an eijuii; chance nnd the bank simply collects a percentage of the money staked. Un fortunately for the players, however, there Is not the slightest reason for doubting that the frame ns ordinarily condttctiil Is ns crooked ns the tradi tional dog's hind leg. There are thirty six diameters on n che fa ticket, each representing some familiar object. The Hon, tiger, moon, month, silver money, icold money, box, centipede, dog, rat are among these, but many of the characters represent things which are not generally dis cussed lu polite society. A person who wishes to piny the game seeks an agent nnd gives hlrn what sum he wishes, from 5 cents up, nt the same time Indlcntlng what char acter he chooses. This character Is marked off on the agent's ticket nnd the fortune-seeker receives a slip nc kiiowiedk'lng bis bet. or stake. Should the particular character prove at the Irawing to be the winning number the lucky player wins thirty times the amount of his stake. Thus If he stakes S cents he wins J1..V) or If he plunges heavily with, say a dollar be wins f.30. Hut he does not get all that he wins. There Is the ngent to be considered nnd he collects 10 per cent of the amount of the winning, so that the man who won () would receive only $L'7 from the hands of the agent. It Is one of the odd traits in the Chi nese character that made che-fa so popular with them. They are devoted believers In dreams. If a Chinaman dreams of a rat, for Instance, he will loe no time In seeking a che-fa ngent nnd backing the rat to win nnd no number of recurrent losses seems to upset the Chinese faith In the heaven sent sign for success. Of course. It Is apparent thnt If a man played on ev ery one of the thirty-live characters he would In all probability win, but his w in wouui tie a loss, ror tie would only receive thirty times the amount of the single bet on the winning character less the agent' commission of 10 per cent. Such Is the game of che-fa. Barring only the dream portion of It, it does not seem to possess any particular al lurements, and to some people even the chance of betting that their dreams will come true does not seem attract ive. Possibly the average American does not have the same kind of dreams ns does the mild eyed chink. That can easily be Imagined from n casual glimpse nt a Chinese meal and a re flection of the possibilities of what even n simple Welsh rarebit can ac complish. Hawaiian Star. Alliterative Itoinance.
