LANE COUNTY.
Lane county, the home of Cottage Grove, is
Oregon's banner timber county, having 29,000,
000,000 feet of standing timber, fir, cedar and
hemlock predominating; and ranks with the
best for farming, dairying and agricultural
purposes.
Lane county is the largest, but one, in the
great state of Oregon, its total area being
2,729,770 acres. It has 496,766 acre of un
appropriated and unsurveyed lands, with an
additional area confined within the borders of
the Government Timber Kcserve of 195,720
acres.
Lane county is centrally located in that sec
tion of the state known as "Western Oregon,"
containing 7,000 square miles, extending from
the majestic Pacific Ocean eastward, 160 miles,
to the summit of the Cascade Mountains, with
an average width of fifty miles.
Eugene, the county seat of Lane county, is
on the Southern Pacific railway at the head
of navigation of the Willamette Kiver, and is
121 miles south of Oregon's metropolis, and
twenty-two miles north of Cottage Grove,
One-fourth of the territory of I.ane county
is valley or bottom land. The soil is as rich
as can be found under the canopy of heaven,
producing grain, grass, fruits and vegetables
m unlimited abundance. The remainder of
the territory of the county stretches away into
rolling and lertile foothills, and then into
rugged mountains. Bountiful crops of all
kinds are grown year after year on these
foothill farms, while the mountain ranges
furnish abundant grazing for the young stock.
In Lane county heads the waters of the
Willamette River, one of the most beautiful
rivers in the world. Its waters are pure, cold
and sparkling, coming from the snow-capped
mountains through the channels of the many
tributaries that dash from every direction into
the valley.
In Oregon the seasons are not designated by
the "Cold1' and "Hot" seasons, but rather by
the "Dry" and "Wet." By the "Wet" season
it is not to be understood that it is uniformly
wet or rainy, neither should it be understood
that the "Dry" season is indicative. of a dearth
of moisture.
During the wet season 75 per cent of the
annual precipitation occurs, while occasional
showers, adequate to give a growing stimulus
to the several crops, make up the other 25
per cent. The average annual rainfall in this
section of the state is from twenty to thirty
five inches, with an average temperature of
51 degrees, the thermometer rarely registering
above 90 degrees in the summer season, and as
rarely falling to 20 degrees above in winter.
The large area of fertile and productive
lands in this section is well adapted to diversi
fied farming, with climatic conditions that
admit of the husbandman working out of doors
every month in the year. Wheat, oats, barley,
hay, hops, fruits and vegetables of all kinds
are grown in abundance, although it may be
said that wheat is not as extensively grown
here at the present time as formerly, many
contending that their farms are more profita
ble in the raising of other crops, and the
breeding of stock. Corn is also quite exten
sively raised here, although not as yet con
sidered a staple crop.
Improved farm land can be purchased from
$10 to $50 per acre. The tributaries of the
Willamette River furnish ample water power
for manufacturing purposes.
Lane county is well worth the close inspec
tion of the investor or homeseeker. When you
come West, with all due respect to all other
sections of the state, do not overlook Lane
county, with its great timber belts, its adapta
tion to fruit, stock, chicken raising and dairy

THE LONDON MINERAL SPRINGS.
Among the new industries developed in the
upper Willamette, are the London Mineral
Springs at London, Oregon. These springs
have been known for years to contain medical
virtues.
The water has been analyzed by the State
University at Eugene, and contains:
Fer litre.
Sodium Chloride 2.0692
Sodium Silicate 1292
Iron and Alum Chloride 0100
Magnesium Chloride 1584
Calcium Chloride 1.5368
It was not until many had sought and
found relief in the use of these waters, that
an idea was advanced that the development
would be of benefit to mankind and also be re
munerative to those interested in them. In
pursuance of this idea a grove was cleared
and a commodious hotel was erected, no pains
or money being spared to make it healthful
and convenient. A bath house was built and
the grounds provided with perfect drainage,
a daily mail and hack line, a store, postollice
and meat market were established. These
were open to the public but a short time ago
and the success of the undertaking has been
a happy surprise to all concerned, as tho
afflicted are flocking there for relief from their
ailments, both acute and chronic, and with few
exceptions have been relieved. The water
seems to possess a remarkable effect on
rheumatism, which it seems to eliminate entire
ly from the system. One man who had been
on crutches for twenty years abandoned them
after he had taken the fifth bath and has not
used them since. Many other phenomenal
cures for rheumatism are among the won
ders wrought by these waters. Stomach and
kidney troubles seem to yield, rapidly to their
power, as relief in nearly every case is ex
perienced almost from the beginning.
The tonic effects of this water is great,
containing rich quantities of iron, and those
suffering from blood disorders, general de
bility, skin diseases and catarrh, to our per
sonal knowledge, have almost without excep
tion been benefitted and cured by their use.
Many have gone there suffering from loss
of vitality and nervous prostration, and after
staying a short time, claim to have been cured
and go away strong and happy.
The management finding that they owed
a sacred duty to humanity and desiring to do
the most good to the greatest number, decided
to organize a company, with which are identi
fied some of the leading men of Lane county,
to put the water through a thorough course
of experiments and place the product on the
market at as reasonable price as the puritv
of the product and careful preparation will
justify.
For nearly a year the management has been
prosecuting these experiments to find the best
method of putting it on the market in a form
in which it could be kept in its purity bo that
none of its medical virtues be destroyed.
Although repeated demands were n'i:u!i for
the water, yet the company were determined
to give the public n product which was tho
result of thorough investigation by the best
medical talent and if the water failed tn stand
the test they would abandon the enterprise.
But they were not to be disappointed.
I-nto this season a large and modern bottling
plant was added, and as soon im the water was
placed on the market the result was inimical,
although their new riant, is large and sullicient
to supply a great demand, and their orders for
bottling supplies large likewise, tliey were far
too small and the ever Increasing demand taxes
their energies to fill the orders.
One thing that makes this place so popular
is the easy and comfortable way in which it
is reached. It lies twelve miles south of Cot
tage Grove, over one of the best and most
pleasant roads in Lane county,, traversing tho
most picturesoue and prosperous valley of the
Coast Fork all tho way.
As Saratoga is to the East - as Hot Springs
is to the South so London Mineral Springs
will bo to the West, if its short past is any
criterion of its future; for each one of its
patrons are living advertisements of its virtues
and its circle of friends grows broader as time
goes on.

THE OREGON SIENNA I'AINT COMPANY.
One of the important industries which is
destined to bring lasting fame to South Lane
county and vastly increase its manufacturing
output, is the development of the Oregon Sienna
Paint Company, which is situate two miles
west of Walker Station, on the Southern Pa
cific railroad, and four miles northwest of
Cottage Grove.
This magnificent bed of mineral paint has
been tested by experts arid is found to be the
largest deposit ever discovered in the United
States, and rivals the famed Siennas imported
from Italy.
The area of the deposit prospected by shafts
and borings covers over forty acres,, but its
extent in area is as yet unknown. It slopes
from the valley up the mountain side, ond is
deposited by nature in tiers or blanket strataa
aggregating over forty feet in depth, each of
which stratas is infused with mineral oil,
with colors varying from a pure white to a
dark yellow. As far as discovered there are
twenty-seven shades of colors.
The company has in operation a mill which
reduces three tons of the Sienna per day, to a
fineness suitable for mixing. It is r.ow ar
ranging to largely increase this plant.

A WARNING TO MOTHERS
Too much care cannot be used with
small children during the hot weather
of the summer months to guard
against bowel troubles. As a rule It
is only necessary to give the child a
dose of castor oil to correct any dis
order of the bowels. Do not useany
substitute but give the old fashioned
castor oil and see that it is fresh, as
rancid oil nauseates and has a ten
dency to gripe, if this does not check
the bowels give Chamberlain's Colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea remedy and
then a dose of castor oil, and the dls
euse may be checked in its lnclpleney
and all danger avoided. The cantor
oil and this remedy should be pro
cured at once and kept ready for in
stant use as the first Indication of any
bowel trouble appears. ThU Is the
most successful treatment known and
may le relied upon with implicit con
fidence even in cases of cholera infan
