The Mitchell trial is progressing

public so long in their service, but
the enormity of the offences alleged
and the people involved. A very
sad thing is the fact that the Sena
tors own partner Judge Tanner has
been compelled to testily agaicst
him, and it has evidently greatly
worn on him.
From all the evidence it certainly
looks as though the Senator was
very guilty, and that not only has
this been a great crime worked out
in the last years of a long life de
voted to public service hororably
and devotedly, but that in his early
life he was not as honorable, and
seems to have tried to live down
his past in coming to Oregon, but
the old saying seem to have been
true, your sins will find you out.
If the Senator is guilty he should
suffer, hard as it seems. Better be
straight all the time, first and last.

the Wynne hardware company will

Epworth Forum
Monday evening the regular meet
ing of the Epworth Forum was held
in the Methodist church. Many of
the members were present and a
splendid program was rendered.
The principal topic cf the evening
was a debate : Resolved that the
Lewis and Clark fair will be benefi
cial to the city of Portland. Affirma

J. M. Isham. Judges Mrs. J. I.
Jones, Jeshie Berg and Eber Brown,
The aflirmative brought forward
as its chief points the benefits de
rived from a moral stand, the recent
cleaning up of Portland's politics
from on education, the instructive
value of the exhibits, the now ideas,
the broader scope from a financial
value, the money brought and spent
in Portland, the influx of people to
the state for investments after seeing
the beauty and worth of the state,
the possibility of increased trade
with the Orient.
The negative not only contra
dicted the point abovo, proving that
while Portland had a moral cleaning
ap, the fair was bad enough to
leave a pretty hard impression on
the minds of visitors, the saloons
and rough joints at the entrance to
the fair, the irte drinking booths
within, the grafts being worked.
The financial depression after tho
end of the fair would more, than
counter balance the gain from money
left in the town, tho building left
vacant, the firms that would have
goods left on their hand3, the many
firms that would not bo able to

the home of hia sister, Mrs. Harvey
Crow, of Lorane, on Monday June
2Cth of paralysis, at the a'e of
8G years.
Mr. Landreth was on old and re
spected gentleman, and esteemed by
all who knew him. He leaves two
brothers and two sisters to mourn
his demise.
The funeral services took place
yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at

A Sad Accident-

of about 22 who has been workii
at the Booth-Kelley mill at Saginaw
was killed Monday morning while
felling a tree. The tree ou which
he was working, as it fell struck a
dead hemlock, which fell on the
young man breaking his back, and
crushing his skull, so that he died
instantly.
The body was brought up to the
store of Marion Ve'ach to be em
balmed after which it was taken to
Oregon City for burial on Tuesday.
Ihe young man was a son of
Ambrose Plueard of that place who
greatly mourns the loss of his son.
