of the young chick's life. So soon ta
they nro old enough wheat, hulled oats,
cracked corn and a little millet need
may be given to them. For n meal of

Above all things, never feed any wet
ar sloppy foods. Po not allow the
brooder to become soiled or dampened
from water or the scalding milk or wet
foods. Keep the Interior of tho run
way of the brooder perfectly clean, dry
and free from tho Influence of sour or
spoiled food of any kind. When the
brooder chick foods are mnde u? of
there Is not no much necessity for grain
food. When the chicks are run out
upon tho grnss they can mnko tholr
own selection of this, and when tho
weather or other conditions will not
permit provide them with some very
short cut grass, clover or vegetable
tops of some kind. It Is always best
to cut this Into very small particles
with a pair of shears. Long pieces of
grass or green food of any kind Is like
ly to clog up tho crop or passageway
from the crop to the gizzard.
One of the most dangerous happen
lags to the brooder chick Is the pros
enco of bowel trouble, from whatever
cause It may coma It Is tho most
prevalent danger of all, and more
chicks are destroyed through this agen
cy than from all other causes combin
ed. Too much heat, too little heat,
dampness, cold and exposure are all
prolific causes of this trouble, ell of
which must be provided against. When
wet or sloppy foods are fed they pro
duce the same trouble. Pour food
causes Indigestion nnd fermentation In
ihe crop and thus creates the same
trouble. Avoid all these dangers and
care for the chicks In a good, common
seuse, everyday fashion and feed them
as chicks should be fed and you should
succeed with the handling of brooder
chicks.

quired by the hens for providing the
shells of eggs, and which Is In a more
soluble form in the food than In the
shape of oyster sheila or other Insoluble

proportion of flesh forming elements.

Was Mrs. Martin's Sister.
Mrs. J. R. Numemaker who was
drowned near Ileppner May 30, was
a sister of Mrs. U. S. Margin of this
place. She visited here with her
sister two years ago. Also O. J.
Cox whose child was drowned is a
brother of Mrs. Martin, together
were two children of Sirs. Nume
maker's drowned. Mr. Cox lived
at this place leaving here some
three years ago. Mr. Numemaker
is among the largest and most pros
perous sheep men of the Heppner
district. Mrs. Martin was wired
the sad news of the drowning but
too late for the burial. Full partic
ulars have not been learned as yet.
