THE NITROGEN BACTERIA.
Gettlna: Tb.ra Into the LnBd-"w-l
Closer Soil InocQl.t.. Alfalfa.
The home of the nitrogen gathering
bacteria Is the tubercle upon the roots
of various leguminous plants, and there
Is one kind of bacteria for red clover,
another for eonpeas and another for
alfalfa, and so on.
Many of the older farmers of Illiiioit
have stated to Dr. C G. Hopkins or tin
experiment station of the stair iliat
when this country was very new It was
commonly found ditlleult to get ,1
"catch" of clover on new land. Aftei
a good "catch" was once got then 11
was easier to get clover to grow on that
land the next time. There was n say
ing umong the farmers that clover
would not do well until they got the
"wild nature" out of the land. Their
final suewss was undoubtedly due not
to getting anything out of the land,
but rather to getting the bacteria lulu
the land.
In discussing the nitrogen bacteria In
connection with various legumes on Il
linois soil Dr. Hopkins has said:
On one of the koII experiment fields
on the university farm at L'rbana
where soy beans have been grown for
three years no tubercles could be
found on the plants either the first or
second year, and only an occasional
plant with tubercles could be found
the third year. In 1002 a series of
plots, some of which bad been treated
In different ways with applications of
limestone, phosphorus and potassium,
were seeded with soy beans. No tuber
cles could be found at any time during
the season on the soy beans growing
on any of the different plots. In 1003
the same plots were again seeded to
soy beans, and at the i.me time part
of each plot was Inoculated with In
fected soy bean soil drilled in with the
seed at the rate of about 500 pounds of
Infected soli to the acre. When the
plants were only a few weeks old, tu
bercles were to be found upon many
plants growing where the Infected soil
bad been applied, and before the close

of the season at least half of these
plants In tho Inoculated part of the
Held had one or more tubercles upon
their roots, and some plants could lit
found whose roots were ubuinhiutly
provided with tubercles (see the out).
It is believed that a hundred pounds
of Infected soy beun soil per acre will
be HtilJlelent to produce a thorough In
fection the second year.
From Investigation Dr. Hopkins finds
conclusive evidence that Infected sweet
clover soil cun bo usimI for the Inocula
tion of nlfalfn fields, the bacteria of the
two plants acting the same. Tho In
fected soil may bo obtained from any
place where tho sweet clover Is found
growing with abundance of tubercles
on Its roots. The soli may bo collected
to 11 depth of three or four Inches and
scattered over the alfalfa field at the
rate of a hundred pounds or more to
the acre.
