The membei-ol the City Coun cil who were quoted as saying they were about to limit the use of water in the city say it is an erroui ous improsion. The explanation made bv them is to the effect that 3 the 4-inch main which brings the water to the city is not sufficiently i large to Mipply nil the demands ZS; 1 which might be made upon it. i They think it will be unwise to al :5J , low the irrigating of vegetable gar 3 dens. For domestic, lawns, or ; motors already in use tliere is no intention uiou their part to at- tempt any change, unless an ex travagant use be made ol it. Opening Up. ' As will be seen by teferencc to our other columns, work in this part of the country is starting up in the various industual branches. The winter here, as. elsewhere, lias been an exceptionally severe one. Bohemia, the mining district on which Cottuge Grove and vicinity so largely depends, experienced the greatest fall of snow since its dis covery. With a few exceptions where preparations were made in the fall all work was suspended. The snow is now rapidly disappear , ing and the miners and companies are just resuming operations. The lumbering interests which also are of vast importance; under the restored freight rates are en larging their scope of business. With these two industries success fully carried on, all others must necessarily prosper. Everything now indicates that Cottage Grove and Bohemia are to have the most satisfactory season they have ever experienced. By , the middle of June the Bohemia i Mining District will be open lor ex- amination. All the other industries are open for inspection all the time. ! The Woodburn Rally. That republican rally at Wood burn Saturday night was a Hum mer from the headwaters of Hum mer's creek. There was no ha'.f hearted feature about it, from Jim Buffs spectacular debut in all the gorgeous colors ct the rainbow, 1 representing Othello in Josephs' ' coat, to the eloquent and convinc- i ing speeches by Malarky and ilar ! ris. Republicanism was in the air. the music of the bands, from B flat to hieh C. was shoutincr for Roose- J j velt and the small bojs were griev h i ing only because it would beat 2 I least ten years before they coil Id ! join as tangible participants in such enthusiastic demonstrations. And it need not be concluded that Wal ter Tooze was at all reticent on the auspicious occasion. In fact, his conduct througnout the meeting indicated that he was fairly well pleased with the proceedings, and the general opinion was that he would never make an acceptable candidate on the Parker platform. The Woodburn meeting was one of the best ever held in Marion county and promises over 8oo of that 20, ooo majority for Roosevelt in No vember. Statesman. Lane will add another 8oo and some over. Eugene Register. COPPER PRODUCTION. The annual production of copper has steadily increased almost year by year, says lifting Wprld, al though old mines are being worked out by ore being taken from the ground. (Jn theotuer hand, mod ern science permits working a mine to a much greater deptli than formerly. The world's production of copper in 1801 was 9,000 tons, which was increased to only 30, 000 tons in 1850, in 1 891 to 279,309, and in 1903 to 589,361 tons. Nearly every one of the old mines are still yielding their quota of the metal and each year witnesses the open ing of new ones. A fair price and demand for copper will keep the mines of the world in full operation, as well as stimulate the search in new sections, JOINT CANVASS. Hngono, On., April Ml. UK) I.
