Throughout the length and breadth of the land wherever there is a paper or journal which repre sents the ruining industry and especially of mining stocks, there seems to be a united effort in de manding the management of cor porations shall be honest with the shareholders. By sad experience in the past it has been learned that one dishonest corporation or man agement will do much harm to legitimate mining enterprises. In Hue with this idea is the fol lowing taken from the Daily Min ing Record is given: "The prime factors in the suc cess of a mining company are hon esty and capability of the manage ment. It might be suggested that even these without a good property cannot obtain success. Honest management having also a plentiful supply of enterprise would set about to obtain other properties if the first venture proved a failure. A good property without honest management does not always insure profits to shareholders. Give us honest and capable management and we will take our chances on the property. Honest men will not present a proposition to the public unless they themselves are honestly con vinced that it is promising. They will use honest judgment in investigating the proposition. All the public wants is a fair run for its money. If the promising proposition does not pan out, why thi promoters are not to blame. They used honest judgment; hon estly expended the money in a search for ore and nothing more could be asked. The strictest investigation should be made regarding the character of the management. Clean promoters court such in vestigatlon. The unscrupulous shun it. If a man has cheated once, but little reliance should be placed in him. Dishonest men get the public confidence by questionoble means Do not be hoodwinked. Investigate character and stand ing. Do not invest until you get satis faction. Honest men can and will readily "make good." They expect investigation, and the more searching the better they like it. Safe bind is safe find. Put your money in the hands of honorable men and your chances for success will be greater. Honest management coupled with capability is the strongest factor for success in a mining com pauy." Business Men's Meeting, The business men of Cottage Grove have dunug the past week inaugurated a movement looking to reliet Irom what is considered ex cessive freight rates as charged by the Southern Pacific Railroad Com pany. There seems to be no feeling of enmity toward the railroad com pany, but is, as asserted by the mer chants and lumbermen, a matter of self preservation and protection of the business interests they have built up in this valley. It is claimed that tnese great in dustries have grown to their pres ent proportions aided largely by the freight rates which until re cently have prevailed. That the increase of these rates now charged bv the railroads are practically pro liibitory to the shipping of lumber to outside markets. The freight tariff ou imports are also considered unjust. These matters will be presented to the railroad officials in a spirit of fairness and with the request that justice be done the people. Treatment of Ores. Wc print 011 first pngc of this issue an article on the increased use of cyanide in Cripple Creek. This method of treatment of ore;, has been constantly improved upon for years, and no doubt will still be improved iu the years to come. Possibly it may prove of great benefit in'the treatment of some of the lov grades ores ol the Bohemia district. One thing is cettain. It has been used and is still being suc cessfully introduced into many places, where other mctlioiis nave failed. - It is well for our mining men to keep posted upon the work of other localities, so they may take advan tage of successes and avoid failures.
