STILL ANOTHER PIONEER.
Capt. Pleasant C. Noland, of
Lane county, died at his residence
in Cresvvell on last Tuesday.
The captain was a Mexican war
veteran, went t California in 1849,
returned to Missouri it) 1851, started
west again in 1853 and arrived in
Dane county same year, was one
of the prominent Indian fighters,
being captain of a company.' The
funeral was held in Creswell on
Wednesday.

Supt. Hickey, wno come to the
city Monday with his sick wife, re
ports thelower tunnel of the Vesu
vius propert) still showing a fine
body of good ore. IJe states it is
one of the best showings he has
seen iu the camp. He also reports
the Riverside tunnel, according to
last report, is making good progress
and the ore continues iu quantity
and quality.
The Oregon-Colorado is still pro
ducing a good grade of copper ore.
As before mentioned iu the Nugget,
Mr. Hickey is in charge of these
properties during F. J. Hard's ab
sence iu the East.

Jenks, Curry and Kerns have re
cently been prospecting for cinabar
011 the Keru ranch about five miles
east of town and some 1500 feet
from the O & S 15 railroad. The
ledge so far as as developed appears
to be about fifty feet wide. Quick
silver can be panned and in some
instances seen iu the ore. Not

The latest estimate of the loss by
the Baltimore fire Ls 125 millions of
dollars, with an insurance of from
80 to go millions. The vaults seem
to have protected their contents!
The following is the latest.
Baltimore, Feb. 10. An army of
men are clearing the streets. Sev
eral are open to wagon traffic. The
mayor and business men held a
meeting this afternoon. The en
gineers say all the standing walls
will have to come down, as recon
struction would be unsafe.
At a meeting of the citizens thi3
afternoon a resolution was passed
asking the legislature to appeal to
the government for federal forces to
protect the burned district. Hun
dreds of thousands of dollars are
being transferred from vaults in the
ruins to safer locations.
The mayor decided this afternoon
to issue an appeal to the whole
country for financial aid.

has a world wide reputation and Is
one of the best musical organizations
on the road. It consists ot eight
people and was organized, Oct 6, 1871,
at Flsk University, Nashville, Tenn.,
and has been under the same man
agement for 20 years. This concert
company only visits Cottage Grove

Mr. H. O. Thompson, one of the
members of the Cottage Grove
Electric Co incorporated was un
till recently a resident of Harrison,
Idaho, where he was engaged in
the same Hue of business. Mr.
William Shceby was also a resident
of the same place.
Last week these gentlemen pur
chased the plant of Mr. Abrams
and have taken possession and pro
pose to furnish tlie best service pos
sible under the circumstances.
In conversation with Mr. Thomp
son it was learned the company in

present plant and install a complete
new system, one tnat will prove
sufficient for all demands made up
on it.
