wood. Its discovery I. due, like others

Ho had some crude petroleum from a

"reaction" bad a powerful odor, ll
was too strong to be agreeable to the
nostril.', but bo moistened a bit of
paper with the fluid, aud, waving It In
front of his nose, perceived immediate
ly that tbe smell was that of sandal
wood oil. He had obtained, quite by
chance an artificial oil of sandalwood
Impure, It Is true, but easily sus
ceptible of purification by refining.
Tbo discovery I. U-lleved to bo of
great value commercially, but Dr. Day
ha. too mucb scientific business on
band to bother with exploiting a yn
tbotlc perfume, and makes the world
welcome to his lucky "flud." Inasmuch
as tbe oil can be got from petroleum
tn endless quantities at a very cheap
rate It Is likely to drlvo the ordinary
sandalwood oil, which is obtained by
distillation from the weed, out of the
market.

nnd China, which devours nearly ev
erything snvo metals, will not touch
sandalwood, and that la one reason
why io mucb of It Is made up In cask
et, boxes nnd similar articles that
come from Asia. Most people arc
famllllar with the agreeable perfume
of boxes made from this material
