Hie Sunday Closing Law Interests Doliemlan Ho Comment on Articles Published In Ho Itcmla Nugget nnJ Sides In With "Observer" Hobeim. Ore., Sept., 17, 'oj. Editor HoliemiR NtigKet: In your issue of Sent. 4111 ap peared mi article by "an Observer" rind in the issue or Sept. 1 1 im ans wer by C. 11. Wallace; now it ssecms to the writer that be did not make a very careful perusal of the article by "Observer," or else be does not know what the antecedent of 'this" is; now the article in question says: "He (Ged)cajls and pleads:' Give me now thy heart, but be does not make n machine out of a man and force him to do bis bidding. Now, Sunday laws do this very thing.- Now what does the Sunday law do! Does it as Mr. W. says. Mr. O. says, try to control the indi vidual conscience, or does it try to force or to force him to do his bidding?" Now it seems to the ....I. .1... i.nl ... wiubi i.mt wusrrverss ianKuaKc means Sunday laws make a ma- dune out of a man to force him a man to do His God s bidduiK. ..... i. that he cannot see that Sunday legislation tries to control the con science indirectly; for be says. "All Sunday laws is for the government of conduct, human action, not con science;" well and good, but if a man kills another he is immediately arrested, if possible and if it happens to be Sunday he is "thrown in" till next tiny; but he is not ar rested because he did it on Sunday but because it is a 6rime toward bis fellowman; but if a man opens bis store be is arrested and taken care, ol, because it is Sunday, and a crime against some ones' God. It is a crime to kill at any time, but not to open a store except on Sunday. Now it seems that a man's conscience could dictate to him what was a sin against his God and not some other person. So Mr. W. says. "A man with a thimble full of brains knows you can no more control the individual conscience by-statute law than you can, control a cyclone with a band bellows". Then why does he advocate the trying of it? Or hasn't be that much brains? For it Sunday legis lation certainly does try to. But if it is, not clear to him yet, let him make another examination of "Observer's" article. It says, "Sunday laws do this very thing," that is tries to "make a machine out ofa man;." but let us ask, how? Read on. "It Sunday legislation interferes with the right of the individual conscience to worship! how, when and where he pleases, or not to worship at all if he so chooses." And still more he quotes from Hon. I. S. Ewart, K. C. Winnipeg, of Manitoba, saying, "I believe legislation to enforce Sunday observation is not only determinal to the best interests of society, but is an improper and un warranted interference with the great Protestant right of private judgement in all matters pertain ing to religion." So by Mr. W's. statement we must conclude that Mr. Ewart has not as much as a tbimble lull of brains. . And, as Hon. R. M. Veateb said, in his oration at London, Ore., July t, 1903. "All men are born equal and shall remain sfc before the law. We must conclude that one man's opinion would be as good before the law as another's". So if it is some ones opinion that such and such a person should be made to refrain from doing busi ness on a certain day, because they think be should worship God, and he does not think so, his opinion is . . . 1 . . . just as good betorethe law as their s. So we see that no matter how we look at tlie bunday question we find that it does conflict with the f, "'e individual conscience tn nftrc1iln flrtH lirhAII M, C' nlftlCM l" ""'"'1' '-"'"i ""-" """ j"v--. lioHUMIA.
