Friday, March 20, 1903. It Is difficult at this time to sec liie outcome of the congressional contest. While many are of the opinion that Hon. Binder Hermann should not be returned to congress, setting up nil sorts of reasons in defense of their assertion, among mem mat Air. nermann is a pro fessional office seeker, etc., still at this time it looks to a "nigger up a tree," tliat Mr. Hermann is very much in evidence. Mr. Hermann may be n "professional office seeker;" but this is not against him. All politicians, at least many of them, are "profes 5ional office seekers". That is, they always try to remain in office; and as a rule the so-called "pro fessional office seeker" makes the very best officer. It is his profes sion, and by his profession he lives. He takes a pride in it. If he did not mnkc a good officer he would very soon find himself out of a job. Mr. Hermann may be a "profes sional" In this respect, niuj if so his friends can and will point to bis record with pride, and demand that he be returned. He is the safest and most logical candidate at this time for the r'a made vacant by the untimely death of lion. Thos. H. We would have a poor delegation, in deed, did it prove to be of so small a calibre that members could not get together on matters of great moment to the state bestowing such high honor upon them. The people of Oregon today feel that Mr. Her mann is the proper man, and it is almost a certainty that he will re ceive the nomination. The citizens of Lorone and far mers of that section are to be con gratulated upon the enterprise they manifest in securing a telephone line from Cottage Grove to that place. Lorane and vicinity has al .'bvs been ra'ed as one of the 'I relit it and m st progressive com aiuni its in La 'e county, and now '.he god peopl of that section have , Jspltyed ther. spirit of en terprise by taking up the matter of a telephone line from this city to Lorane. The Telephone Company could not see its way clear to ex tend to Lorane, but are furnishing some assistance in the matter. It is a desirable enterprise and should meet with success. A copy of the Lane County Leader, under the proprietorship and editorship of W. C. Conner, reached the exchange table of the Nugget last Friday. Mr. Cornier is a former Cottage G.ove boy, the son of Ira Conner, one of the best men in Lane county, and in this instance the son is a chip from the old block. Under his management the Leader is greatly improved in fact one would hardly suspicion it to be the same paper. It comes out with an attractive new head, good press work neat ads and. a good local news service. It will certainly be appreciated by its patrons, and the Nugget extends the glad hand of welcome. The people of Lorane and in fact Cottage Grove are to he congratu lated upon the readiness to assist the farmers telephone line to con nect the two places. In this day anil age tne telephone cuts an im portant part in the affairs of men commercially and socially, and we cannot help recognizing the great benefit this particular line will be. We cannot have too many tele phone lines, any more than we can have too many rnilroads. Lets get closer together in thought, in spirit and in action. The tele phone is one of the substantial links. J.L. Page, one of Eugene's well known business men, has been ap pointed postmaster of that place to succeed Dr. McCornack. The re tiring postmaster is a mau of fine ability and has made a splendid officer.
