Horse Stealing From Josephine
County Sheriff May Die.
A telephono message received here
this (Friday) morning from Kugene
announces thnt a runner from Wal
ton, 30 miles west of Eugene on the
Sluslnw road, arrived early this
morning for medical aid nnd with
the news that Sheriff Withers had
been shot In the neck by Elliott
Lyons, upon whom the sheriff was
serving n wnrrnnt for horse stealing.
Issued from Josephine county.
The shooting occurred Thursday
evening. The sheriff entered the
house nnd as he was about to serve
the warrant. It Is reported that some
women selied him and ns he strug
gled to five himself, Elliott Lyons
shot him, the bullet entered the neck
Just above the shoulders. It Is said
the sheriff's lower extremities are
parnlyred, nnd little hopes for his re
covery nre entertained.
