Grove to attend a meeting Friday

over the method of procedure in
the matter of seenriug literature
necessary to give our particular lo
cality recognition in the several
states where the literature of our
, sister towns is so soon to be circu
lated through the medium of the
advertising bureau, represented by
Mr. McKinney. who visited this
eity some time ago. It will be re-
membered that no money consider
ation was asked by the bureau
manacer. He simply extended a
courteous invitation to provide his
bureao with whatever literature we
desired that onr town and vicinity
might have asa representation along
with other towns. We must take
j into consideration that every town
and locality of any coneinence in
i .Oregon is enthusiastic in this mat
ter and that they have- agreed to
furnish from .50.000 to 150,000
pamphlets, according to the size of
the town, and that in some in
stances the matter is already in the
hands of the printer, and that if we
do. anything toward showing the
good people of the middle west
that we are alive and on earth, we
must get at it as soon as possible.
This is an opportunity that comes
to a state upon rare occasions, say
nothing of a community, and the
best should be made of the oppor
tunity. It means the rapid growth
of the state of every community
m the state. It means the intro
duction of wide-awake and pro
gressive citizens of every state, who.
represent in the aggregate thous
ands of dollars in money. It means

The activity In the district has In
creased from year ,to j-ear and some
very rich strikes have been made

cilities as over $5,000,000.
The ores that have been sent out
to tho smelters have mostly been con
centrates. These ores were hauled
Ijy wagon to Cottage Grove at a
cost of $10 per ton. There, are
smelters at San Francisco, Tocoma
and Everett. Tacoroa has received
most of the ore. Tlie coHt ot hauling
on the railroad and treatment at the
smelters has averaged about $15 per
ton, making a total cot from the
mines of $25 per ton. It has, there
lore, been Impossible to ship direct
from tlie mines, with concentrating,
ores running less than $'H per ton,
This, of course, will be obviated
-when the railroad Is completed. It
wlil then be possible to ship the
crudo ores that run $! per ton, and
)etm rt inmil! margin for the owner.
Tilts will be a great boon to many
who cannot utford to put In concen
trating plants.
There Is a line opportunity for
'' capital to put In custom mills. Three
or four of them In various parts of
the district would pay handsomely.
