Ol'HRATION I'HHI'OUMHD. Dr. Wall assisted by Dr. Job and Dr. T. W. Harris, who admin istered the anaesthetic, performed a successful operation Tuesday on Mr. John linker, who has been seriously ill for some time. A por tion of one of the ribs of the patient was removed and the puss was drawn off. He is now in a fair way to recover although it will be sometime before he is able to be about. iMI'KOVI'.MliNTS. Water mains arc being laid on fifth street from main to the school house. There is a frog pond inter vening that requires the attention of the incoming council. Now is the time for city improvements and as n sanitary measure the city should look into the conditions of the streets and alleys. It is easy to breed a pestilence but difficult to tid the town of a nuisance. Kriscoi'M. Suxvieits Rev. Morris, bishop of the Kpisco- pal Diocese of Oregon, assislcd by Rev. John Dowon of Ro-eburg. will hold services at the M. K church nt 7:30 o'clock Monday evening. Hhull ful'l Hi lr Inula lilcn ll.u An.ln, And 1 1 0 1 1 1 1 - mi'iil uway," Well, the night was filled with music at Martin's Hall I'rlday, when the Cottage Grove baud gave its initial program. A fair and at tentive audience greeted the ama teurs as they, for the first time as u full fledged baud invited criticism. Pi of. Cochran skilled to a fault as malinger anil instructor, had his porteges prepared for the occasion. As the curtain rose, so rose the swell of music from the entire com pany of entertainers. Timidity gave way to confidence, nud in spiration followed in the wake, and the victory was theirs. Hearty ap plause stimulated the youngsters and pleased the professor and the program was in their hands from that on. The comet solos by the professor, and the niarrh composed by him for the band were special features. The composition is a tribute to Mr. Coehtan as a composer, and ranks him worthy of note in that sphere. Miss Let tic Veatch re ceived merited applause for her singing. Mis Sadie Kord as a piano soloist displayed her pro ficiency. The Misses Neva Per kins and Carrie Ford, accom panists, acquitted themselves splen didly. Miss Daisy Gilbert's rendering of "The Holy City" was the event of the occasion. With a voice soft as a flute, clear as a bell and of wonderful compass, she held the audience with her distinct expres sion of the theme and filed the hall with melody. Messrs. Wallace, Clement, Veatch and Cochran as a quartet were all that could be ex pected 011 short notice. The irrepressible Harry Hrehaut ably assisted by the only Tom Mud lev ;itid others did tin- cromn- I ' . j tion farce "brown" and made the entire audience leel funny for fully a half hour. Withal, the amateur baud has become one of Cottage Grove'.s especial institutions and deserve ijrcat credit. NO PICK I'OH I'UIIUOATION. United Stulcn I.:iinl Dirii-e, It'MfliiiiK, Ore .
