There is a rumor on the streets
to the effect that Dr Job, the nomi
nee for mayor of Cottage Grove, at
the coining election, will use his
efforts to -tlefeat the city in the
street assessment case now pending
The rumor is evidently put in cir
culation by tliO'ie who are opposed
to Dr Job, and is silly and incon
sistent. Anyone who will give the
matter a moments attention will
conclude that no matter what a
mayor's inclinations might he on a
subject of that kind, that he could
exercise no influence whatever for
or against, that would have any
hearing on the case. The esse is
beyond the consideration and in
fluence of the executive officers of
the municipality. It is now in the
hands of the court. The attorneys
are the only ones who can order or
have the case dismissed. The
friends of Dr. Job need not worry.
He will be found a sturdy worker,
fair, upright and honorable in his
dealings; and his past record is
witness that under no consideration
would he become a party to tricks
and dishonorable methods for or
against the city. He is an honest,
painstaking, upright man, upon
whom the burden and respoui
hilitv of municipal office has rei-ted
year in and year out, and that is
the kind of a man that is needed to
preside over a city government
The Nugrget has been asked to
call attention to the conduct of cer
tain parties who make it a habit to
visit the depot at train timeand cut
up and act funny when the trains
pull in. While in most part the
actions are harmless and un
thoughted on the part of the par
ticipants, still it goes without say
iug that it places the town in a very
bad light when viewed by the av
erage passenger; and in some in
stances much rudeness has been re
sorted to, in yelling aud guying
travelers. It is, at its best, un
gentlemanly, and cannot help re
flecting on the participants as well
as the town, and weshould all have
more pride than to practice such
things.
There is some strife between the
east and west republican delegates
to the County Convention. The
fault is not altogether one-sided,
but each delegation should make
strenuous efforts to put up a solid
front. In this way South Lane can
do something ot direct benefit to
this section of the county. We
will make a better appearance, will
have more weight, and will feel
better generally, if we can fall into
harmonious line.
There is some talk among the
delegates of West Cottage Grove to
use their efforts in the matter of se
curing the nomination of a South
Lane man for county commissioner.
It has been a long time since this
section of Lane county has been
represented in the county court,
and south Lane is certainly deserv
ing of some consideration.
The mining, farming, timbering
and stock raising industries are
what make enterprising and thrifty
towns. Watch Cottage Grove and
vicinity and you will be convinced
that this is the place where all of
these named industries thrive.
Every man should have pride
enough to keep his own back yard
clean whether his neighbor does or
notthis can be applied in various
ways but just now it is applicable
to the back door yards of many of
the residences of this city.
The city of Roseburg has, with
out doubt the dirtiest and muddiest
streets of any city of its size on the
Pacific coast. We hate to say it of
any city, but we have to we never
could tell n lie about such things.
Cottage Grove extends a hearty
welcome to homeseekcrs. Come
