FAVORS GOOD ROADS.
The following is from the pen of
a correspondent to the Roscburg
Reivew, and is "of interest to those
who sec the necessity ol having
good roads in Oregon:
"It seems to me that if ever the
county court of Douglas county
penormcu a meritorious aci u wu.it who js mTlMc f manipulating
when it levied a 3m!ll tax. T'ie,nfrrtirs 0f s,ntc s is iresilict
only fault to be found with that tax
is because it is amy BDoutone-inua
... i
wtiat it origin to uc. a io-miu
i levy for road purposes would not
have been too high considering the
disgraceful condition of our roads.
I have been paying road taxes in
other states, and in no other state
or county have the taxes for road
purposes been so ridiculously low
as in Douglas county; and every
body will ndtuit that no where else
is the necessity of a reasonable road
tax as apparent as in western Ore
gon. And especially that piece of
road from Roseburg up Deer creek
over that abominable li ill east of
town. Why it's an outrage to
common people to pass over such.
canal of mire called roads. A county
court, or council, or a people that
tortures dumb animals by compell
ing them to draw loads over such
roads certainly ought to be prose
cuted for cruelty to animals.
But some whine something about
high taxes and economy. I say
d n economy, where in order to
economize we have to wallow
through the mire up to our knees
in going to town and besides,
don't the politicans in power, from
the highest to the lowest, tell us
that we are enjoying an era of un-
J J i
parelled prosperity? Certainly, if i
that's the case, we ought to be able
to stand a three-mill, or? four-mill,
or even ten-mill tax for the purpose
of making good roads.
Two years ago, while living in
Eden bower, about a mile from the
county road, five of us neighbors
were confronted by the same quest
ion as that which confronts the
people of Douglas county today.
Our private lane was almost im
passable. Something had to be
done in order to enable us to get
to the county road. Well, we

the best piece of road in or around
Roseburg, and it didn't "break"
00 1 any of us either, but was the best
70 00 investment we ever made. Now if
8i 00 1 a 20-mill extra tax did not bauk
w " j rupt us five neighbors, why should
si on not the people of the whole county
be able aim willing to pay a three,
five or even ten-mill tax in order to
make a start to get roads I bat are
fit for civilized people to travel
over?
If any body commences to whine
about that 3-raill tax, or tries to
make political capital out of it by
crying economy hit him with a
brick and hit him hard. Yours for
good roads though it takes the
bottom dollar."

Remedy for a number of years and have !
no hesitancy in saying that it is tho best
remedy for coughs, colds and croup I
