XOTICK.
With this issue of the Nugget T.
H. Supple, who has been in asso
ciation with C. J. Howard in the
publication of the Nugget for the
past six mouths, severs his con
nection with the paper, and C. J
Howard nssumes the entire futurt
responsibility of publication. Tin
efforts of Mr. Supple have been ap
predated and the paper wishe:
him abundant success in whatever
field he may choose.
He who hesitates is lost. The
mmmittpc aDoointed to secure
right of way for the Bohemia Rail
way should not get lost.
How about the right of way?
Wliv not clear the matter up at
once, and then Mr. Morphy aud
his company will do the rest.
A strong effort is being made to
have Crater Lake in Klamath
county set aside as a National
Park. This is a movement in the
right direction and is deserving of
success.
Sunday was ground-hog day.
It is said that he saw his shadow
and went into his hole to remain
another six weeks. More than
likely. We can reasonably expect
six weeks of weather yet that
would curl the hair on any ground
hog on earth.
Thni for the. registration of
voters is proceeding very slowly.
It should be remembered by every
voter that if he wishes to vote at
the June election this year he must
register. Previous registration does
not count. The new law provides
that he must make registry this
year.
Grants Pass has organized a
board of trade. What is the matter
with Cottage Grove? Our business
men should get together and form
a body of this character. The fu
ture of this city demands concerted
action. This matter has often been
talked about, but no move has been
made toward its consummation.
Who will take the initiative for
organization?
The Salem Statesman asks the
question: "What is the greatest
thing about Salem?" Well, we
don't know what is the greatest
thii'g about Salem at the present
time, but it strikes us that about
the biggest thing about Salem at
any one time was about the time
the legislative push was about,
loaded down with the senatorial
sack.
A tabulated statement of the dia
monds aud other precious stones
owned and worn by but thirty-four
of New York's society ladies
amounts to the enormous sum of
$22,250,000. The gem expert of
the Tiffany Company says that the
diamonds owned in this country are
valued at $500,000,000, and that of
this amount $170,000,000 worth are
owned iu New York.
The open air treatment for per
sons in early stages of consump
tion is shown to have been effica
cious to the extent of about 67 per
cent of the cases which were treated
during the past year at the Massa
chusetts State Sauitarium at Ruth
laud, according to the annual re
port made public recently. There
was but one death during the year,
and the percentage of cures or of
marked improvement was con
siderably higher than for two years
past. There were 1100 applications
and 399 were admitted. The av
erage age of the patients wa'J 28.
that might or ir.ir,
W. V. Morphy, representing the
Cottage Grove and Bohemia Rail
road Company, expects to leave for
the Fast at the cloe of this week.
He goes to make final report to his
company, and this report will de
termine whether Cottage Grove
will he the starting jioint of the
road or not. There is nothing
sure in this world except a few
things like dentil and taxes.
Mr. Morphy is a thorough gentle
man, and has made many substan
tial frietids here by his fair aud
courteous manner toward those with
whom he has come iu contact in
matters pertaining to the right of
way. He has asked nothing for
his company except that which is
just and right iu the minds of
people who have taken time to
study into the merits of the propo
sition from a fair and impartial
point of view. However, there are
a lew some in town and some out
of town living along the proposed
route who have shown no small
degree of backwardness in further
ing the proposed right of way.
It is not because those who have
declined to act do not wishv to see
the mining district, Cottage Grove
and the intermediate section of
couutry enriched by the expendi
ture of $500,000 in a railroad enter
prise but because they cannot con
clude on a reasonable price for
damages for right of way through
their property; and because they
do not fully understand and have
not carefully weighed the great
benefit the road will be in the mat
ter of increasing the value of the
property of this section of Laue
county.
Now, gentlemen, the time is at
hand when we should look each
other in the face and become seribus
in this matter, for much depends
upon the impression Mr. Morphy
carries away with him. He has
shown no disposition to want the
earth, but he has frankly confessed
that his 'company does want the
right of way. Now, if we do not
desire a hitch and an unnecessary
delay in the building of the road,
we should show oiir willingness to
comply, and "come to the center"
at once. Delays are dangerous.
By all means, let us take the hint
aud send Mr. Morphy on his home
trip prepared to tell his people that
the entire right of way has been
pledged.
This will give Mr. Mofphy and
his company something to base
their immediate future operations
upon. The company can then get
their construction outfits in readi
ness to begin operations at the
earliest break iu winter. Gentle
men, let us look well to this matter
and stand by for the good of all
concerned. Saginaw is not very
far off, you know; but far enough
to materially damage the busiuess
enterprises of Cottage Grove.
