News comes from Klamath that jllie winds accompany it'E the storm 1 of a few days ago, were the most severe that that country has ever experienced at least to the recol lection of any one living there at, the present time. So severe were Btlie winds tljat the stiff hurricane t swept back the waters of Upper ; Klamath Lake until the bed of ' Klamath River was dry. During I the, fierce wind the waters were parted in a manner similar to tlic parting of the waters of the Red !Sea where the Israelites reached it during their flight from Egypt. The phenomenon of seeing Klamath j River tn such a condition that it 1 could be walked across from shore to shore, without getting the feet E wet, is something that stands with out precedent in the initials of B Southern Oregon. MERRY FORESTERS. They Entertained and All Were Happy. The event of the social season thus far was the masquerade ball at I the Opera House on Christmas evening under the auspices of the Foresters' Lodge. The hall was early filled with merry maskers, Supplemented about its four walls with a mass of the substantial denizens of Cottage Grove. Many of the characters represented were unique, some were peculiarly and excruciatingly funny, one or two were elaborate and a few were what would be commonly called so-so. The instrumental portion of the evenings' joy was all that could be wished for and was presided over by artists in love with their labors who charmed the fleeting hours with sweet melody. The dance from every point of view was de cidedly a success. The members of the Foresters Lodge used every exertion to entertain their friends, but the committee, not being in fallable, made the same mistake that has so often been raadcin the dances of our town too little in terest in the promotion of happiness for the stranger within the gate. To make the dances in this town thoroughly popular more interest must be taken in the strangers, less of self, and a committee in charge of the floor who will make it their especial business to give en joyment to others. It is not pleas ant after the curtain has been rung down to hear strangers say that they have been in attendance upon a funeral. jpassisd o run. Senator Hanna, chairman of the committee of 36 appointed at the cnpital-lobor conference in New Ybrk, was at the White House today and talked most hopefully of the results of the conference. 'I consider the conference," said he, "the greatest step ever taken for the speedy settlement of dis pules arising between labor and capital. The, organization of capi tal, which has come to stay, was an evolution which was naturally pre ceded bv the organization of labor, which also has come to stay, and the concentration of interests of the two sides into the hands of n com n.rniivelv few individuals will make for the besl interests of boih While we do not expect that there Up no strikes, thev will eb minimized as a result of the con ciliation and arbitration policy." Mr. Hanna said he expected the rnmmittee to meet during the winter to adopt by-laws and elabo rate still further the scheme of ar bitration. Tudson Rock Miking Co.
