Siiperintendfiit IJehnc of the Helena has 25 men nt work in tho
mine; the mill is constantly dropping its 10 stamps and crushing about
35 tons of ore daily that will, average about $15 to the ton. Develop
ment work is going ahead with satisfactory results.
J. I,. I.cRoy of the Laura mine, which adjoins the Helena No. 2,
Was in town this week and had some fine specimens of ore from the
I.nurn. Several openings have been made on the mine which show up
well, but in the present working at the end of the 6o-foot tunnel a fine
body of ore has been encountered and he now feels very easy about the
future of this fine property.
I'Vank Jordan returned Inst Saturday evening by stage from Bohemia,
where he spent several days going over the district in search of speci
mens oforetobe sent lo the Boise Mining Exposition, which holds
from July 2t to 25 inclusive. In his search he was ably assisted by
G. W. J,Ioyd and he brought down about 100 pounds of beautiful
specimens. They were gathered from the Mustek, Laura, Grizzley,
Snnriac, Golden Cross, Noonday, Helena, Reed St Fletcher, Citrrin and
other line properties. He attached to each specimen an appropriale
label, boxed them compactly and sent them forward. When placed 011
exhibition these valuable specimens cannot help but attract the attention
and admiration of all mining men who visit the exposition. No better
ore can be found in the Northwest and the best part of it is that where
these specimens came from there is practically an inexhaustable deposit
of just such ore and even better that awaits the helping hand of capital
to convert it into shining dollars of the realm. Mr. Jordan reports con
siderable activity in the district and a good feeling all along the range.
The roads into Bohemia are now in fairly good condition and travel to
and from the mines is on the increase.

"SOROSIS"
A SHOE THAT IS WORN BY
The week has been dry, except
in the southern nud eastern portions
of the state, where Friday ami
Satttrda a few small showers oc
curred. The temperatures have
a vet aged about 4 degrees cooler
than ustulal this season of the year
and there has been mote than the
customary amount of cloudiness.
Haying is nearingcotnpletion and
the crop, asn whole, is an average
one and has been secured in excel
lent condition. The second crop of
alfalfa is mrkiug satisfactory pro
gress. Cutworms have appeared
in the clover fields of Clackamas,
Marion, Linn and Curry counties,
but they ate not nearly so numer
ous as thev were last vear. The
ranges arc drying up, as is usual at
this season of the year, but stock
continues in excellent condition.
The harvest of fall-sown - grain is
becoming general. Wheat, oats,
rye and barley in the Willamette
valley continue doing well. The
heads are huge and well filled with
1 ... t.. ,. r

1 the prospects are not as favorable,
as there is considerable complnint
of small heads with shrunken
berries, and a good deal of the frost
wheat . in Union county has been
cut for hay. Spring wheat is gen
erally very promising, but in many
sections it needs rain. In southern
Oregon the protracted dry weather
has been injurious to grain, nud
the yields there will be below the
average. Hops arc generally free
from lice and making satisfactory
progress, although in some few sec
tions the lateral vines "are reported
deficient, which means that there
will be a corresponding shortage in
the yields. Corn, potatoes and
gardens continue making slow ad
vancement, and the sugar beets are
promising, but all these crops, as a
rule, would be benefitted by more
rain as well as by, warmer weather.
DIVIDE ITEMS.
Mr and Mrs Bert Lee received a
telegram last Thursday to the
effect that a relative would be at
Cottage Grove and asking them to
be there. However they found the
aforesaid relative was going
through on the train so there was
only a few minutes talk and then a
sad good by.
The rock crusher moved last
week for its new position below
Cottage Grove.
Will Mackey left for Eastern
Oregon a short time ago, Joy De
Spain left this week and others
talk of going there.
Mr and Mrs Geo Warner of Row
River were visiting here last week.
Wood hauling is pretty well
along under way, hay is being put
up and in fact we arc all busy at
something.
Mr and Mrs Mejuzer of Yoncolla
came up on a visit to Mr and Mrs
Jacob Geiwitz last Saturday.
George Barloro of Coast Fork
was up here Sunday.
