it is only a slight stroke and Dr.
Scatbrough, of Creswell, the attending-
physician, says that he
thinksdie will be able to get around
again in six months time if another
stroke'docs not follow. Mr. Scars
is well known throughout the state
and the new of misfortune will' be
a shock-to all who know him.
RUNAWAY.
Mr. Alex Coolcy had quite an
exciting runaway while mowing
hay Monday. When the horses
became frightened and starten to
run, Mr. Cooley, in order to keep
from being thrown in front, of the
sickle, fell off the mower behind.
Considerable damage was done to
the machine, and the team was in
jured quite badly. s

Mr. J. W. Gowdy returned homo
Monday afternoon from Portland
bringing with him his stepson
Master Guy Van Riper, who was
taken loathe hospital at that place
some time ago, Guy is much im
proved and it is thought that he
will now;, recover all right. .

. A Miss Urookharl of Drain, ar
lived bore the first of the week to
accept a position in the dining room
at the Sherwood Hotel, and shortly
after her arrival Marshal Nunii rc
celved a telegram from her father
to arrest her and bring her home
as she was running awoy. In ac

shal took the girl back to Drain
Sunday night and delivered her to
her mother, who it seems desired
the girl to come to Cottage Grove
and In some way Mr. Urookhart
Husplcloued that the marshal was
going to bring tbc girl back again
and Mr. Nttuii says he had to do
some pretty good talking, and
finally take a revolver away from
him to keep him from shooting. Mr
Minn returned Home on tlie 1.20
train Monday, and is still able to
attend to his duties.
SINUOUS ACCIDUNT.

while riding with his father on a
load of hay last Friday near Walker
Young's place across the river from
Kugeiie, fell off the load on a pitch
fork, which he had been holding,
the three tines piercing the boy's
body clear through, two holes being
made in the intestines, the tines
coming on; at his back, one of them
barely missing his right kidney
The father of the boy removed the
pitchfork and he was taken to liti
gene, arriving at the hospital about
5 o'clock. Drs. Cheshire and Kuy
kuudall, assisted by Dr. Prentice,
sewed up the holes in the intestines
and the boy is resting easily today
but his condition is serious.

memorial services nt the Christian
Church Sunday. Cqurt Bohemia
met at the hull at 10:30a. m. and
clothed themselves i.; regalia and
marched to the church where the
memorial sermon was preached by

21 of the members in attendance
upon the services which was n

Sunday, breaking his arm between
the arm and elbow. lie was taken
to Dr. Job's office where the frac
ture was reduced. He is a gritty
little fellow.

James Shortridge brought a box
of very fine strawberries to this
office Saturday. They were raised
by Mr. Alfred 'Doolittle on the
summit of the Calapooia mountains.
They are a fine flavor and the lar
gest ones that have come in this
season.

The encampment of the 4th
Regiment at. Bangs park near Eu
gene, closed Tuesday evening and
the companies came to Eugene to
participate in the sham battle on
Skinner butte on July 3. ihe en
campment was a success in every
respect.
