Receiving the nssent of the Cuban
Juiitu, Kunston withdrew. On the fol
lowing morning he visited Kort Hamil
ton, 1 believe It was, where he made
the casual acquaintance of some of the
artillery ollleers there stationed. With
the skill of one somewhat accustomed
to Journalistic Interviewing, he suc
ceeded In gaining from the olllcer
some vacuo Ideas of the theory of bal
listics. Of euch Item of Information he

he secured a list of the best works on
the subject of artillery manipulation.
Thus scantily equipped, yet with nil
the assurance of the man who knows
Ids opportunity, and who knows he can
seize It, Kunston presented himself be
fore tho Junta at the appointed hour.
He came In with the breathless air of
one fresh from a previous and almost
conflicting appointment. Obeying the
request of the Junta to explain what be
knew about artillery practice, the
young Kansan rattled off all the prattle
about big guns that he had picked up
the day before. So glibly did be talk
of matters of which he did not possess
even an nendetnle smattering that he
wits commissioned on the spot as an
urtlllery olllcer In the Cuban service.
He was given passage on the next fili
bustering steamer that left this coun
