No less than three smelter propositions are said to he under consideration. Each of these is engineered by different people and under consideration by different capitalists. In the interest of oh", two trips have been made east already. One depends entirely upon the building of the Hillgarde & Granite Railroad, which will tap the richest smelting ore camp in Fastern Oregon. If this road is built, and there is every reason to believe that it will be, the bonds having been placed already, there is a smelting firm in the east ready to build a plant costing form $500,000 to $1,000,000. All that this firm wants is transportation facilities for ore. It asks no bonus. Telegram. DRAIN NEWS. To meet the growing demands of the school, three new members will be added to the faculty. The training department of the Normal school closed a very suc cessful year's work last Friday. The Drain and Yoncolla baseball teams will try conclusions on the diamond at this place next Satur day. The Methodist pulpit, so long vacant through the illness of Rev. O B Stieyffeller is now ably filled by Rev. Tyre. John H. President J H Orcutt returned from Grants Pass Saturday eveninfr He was one of the instructors of the institute held at that place last week. The outloof: for the Normal this coming year seems bngiiter tnan ever. Both the school building and the boarding ball will be thoroughly renovated and repainted. One of the most pleasant events of the year was a regular old fashioned school picnic which was held in the Lowe park last Satur day. It was a day of feasting and of pleasant social reunion of pupils, teachers and patrons. The Zam Zamin Literary Society held their last meetiug for the year Friday evening. A most success ful program was carried out. One of its interesting features was an able and practical address by Cap tain B D Bosewell on "Civil Gov ernment." The society has been a great success the past year, and will give a special program on commencement week. The program will be as follows: Sunday, June 23, Mac Wallace of Eugene will deliver the baccalaurare sermon. The evening of the follow ing Monday the Literary Society will render their annual program. On Tuesday evening the musical will be given. Wednesday will be class day. Thursday thecommence-l ment exercises will take place in the grove, and on the evening of the same day the alumni will hold their animal reunion. Obsurvkr. BKWARJ3 OF A COUGH. Huston, of Militia Company A, at Eugene, has made the following appointments of non commissioned officers for his com pany: Duty Sjrgeant W. G, White has been appointed first ser geant of the company; Duty Ser geant F. E. Taylor, quarter-mas ter-sergeant; Corporals R. L. Willoughby and Earl Mount, ser geants, and Privates Ray Babb and Horace Burnett, corporals. All these men were members of Com pany C, Secoud Oregon Volunteers, who served in the war in, the Philippines.
