The unveiling of the monument at Champoeg last Thursday com memorates a historical event ol deep significance to the citizens of J Oregon. It was in reality, theob jserance of the 58th anniversary of ' llif hirtli nf tlir nrirrhinl Orppnii. A; a 0 on May 2, 1843, the first govern I ment in Oregon was organized. The organization ot this govern ment was effected at Champoeg, and the site ,of the building in which the meeting was held has been marked by the monument that was unveiled Thursday to the memory oPthe 52 men, who voted in favor of organization, and in commemoration of that eventful meeting. Thus this historic ground wilt' be preserved to posterity marked by a shaft of granite record ing the birth of original Oregon as a self-governing parcel, of the American nation. Champoeg is situated on the Willamette river several miles be low Salem, and it was at this place on the second day .of May, 1843, that 102 settlers met for the al leged purpose of devising ways and means of exterminating the fero cious animals that menanced their flocks, but for the real purpose of deciding upon the momentous question of the ownership of the territory and the sovereignty of the ! United States. Of the 102 men present 52 voted for American sovereignty and of these 52 men but one, Hon. G. X. Matthiew, is alive today. Mr. Matthieu . had the honor of unveiling the monu ment ou the spot where he helped to make history 57 years ago. Gov. T. T Geer, Hon. H. W. Scott and others delivered ad dresses, and Rev. P. S. Kelly, of the Booth Kelly Lumber Company, one of the largest lumber manufacturing concerns in the United States, oper ating some 20 mills and owning perhaps the choicest timber lands in Oregon, says the Portland Tele gram, is in the city for the purpose of purchasing soiiiq engines and making other preparations to in crease the output of their mills. Mr. Kelly purchased two donkey engines and is negotiating for an other. He reports that it is the purpose of his company shortly to work night shifts at its mills at Co burg and Wendling, Both of these mills are now operated on i'ttme, or 1 2 -hour shifts. By reason of the increasing demand for Oregon lumber it has been decided by the company to operate the two mills mentioned, "day and night. This will mean an increase in the work ing force of 250 men, 200 at Wend ling mill and 50 at the Coburg mill. There being somedifficulty in pro curing experienced mill hands, it may be several weeks before the operation of these mills with full night shifts can be beg'un. The larger part of the output of the Booth-Kelly Lumber Company goes to Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Mexico. Considerable trade with Mexico has been established during the past year. This com pany also furnishes all the lumber used by the Southern Pacific Com pany in road and bridge construc tion, car building and repairs, which is considerable of an item in itself. The Booth-Kelly Lumber Com pany owns 100,000 acres of the best timber land in Oregon that has not yet been touched, and consequently is prepared to remain', in business for years to come. NOTICE.
