A new undertaking by the United collection of statistics pertaining to 111 the United states, atyl representees of the survey have been assigned to the various mineral bearing portions of the country. The territory comprising Utah and Arizona will be in charge of Victor C. Heikes. This new move on the part of the Survey is to be a permanent one, the gathering aud compilation of statistics concerning the gold and silver output of the country to be independent and yet supplementary to the report issued annually by the Director of the Mint. The Uncle Sam Mining and Milling Company was organized in Eugene last week. The capital slock of the company is $2,000,000 divided into 2,000,000 shares of $1 each. The mine is located in the Blue River district on the west side of Gold Hill. The company owns four claims: Uncle Sam, Verl, Red Bell and Sunrise. These are some of the finest properties on the hill and have been (ar enough developed to show big veins of valuable ores. In one of these properties a very rich strike was made some time ago which assayed $1280 to the ton. The company expects to begin erecting a mill about May 1. Eugene Register. A multitude of people are making thousands, yes millions, in min ing operations in this western country, but in the list of successful ones the names of non-investors do not appear. At the present time there is no avenue of investment which appeals so forcibly to the investor as does the mining industry, and the returns are much greater than from any other source of investment. There is a certain class, however, which shrink from mining ventures because of failures in this direction in the past. The rank and file of this class are prone to cry down the mining industry and do their best to prevent their friends from making investments in mining or mining securities, no matter how safe and legitimate the investment or speculation, and, while thousands of others make fortunes in this line, they hang back and refuse to be convinced that there is money in mining or that the industry' presents any oppor tunities for safe and profitable investment. This class may well be termed as moss-backs people who are a century behind the times. They ' will always follow the tail-end of the procession, while friends, more .1 progressive, more courageous and more intelligent, fall into line and j eventually make a stake in mining ventures. Others are doing this, i why can't you? The field is wide and there is an opening for everyone. Mining Review. The Pittsburg Post gives the following account of a new method of reducing ore which reads like a fairy story. The discovery is said to lb.ave.been madebv a nhician iand ing the cost as well as tlie time required lor this work down lrom sev eral days to a matter of minutes. The process has been quietly tested in Pittsburg plants during the past few months, says the Post, and in each case has proved fullj up to all tenum a number of Pittsburgers whose names are for the present with held have been preparing to orgauize and secure a charter lor the con trol of the new process. One of the "flux" is that it may be used over and again. The chemical discovery that has finally been made public was developed by someyesrs of stud- by a Dr. Miller, a man advanced in years, whose homa is said to be in the vicinity of Mt Pleasant. His experience with his composition, which is called a "flux" developed the fact that by mixing it with asbestos and placing it in a crucible with raw ores, the heat produced is so intense that the asbestos becomes liquified. The action of the flux and asbestos upon the ore is almost in stantaneous. In forty minutes the removal of the dross from the top of the crucible shows the pure copper, lead, silver or.go!d beneath. The conditions so far are favor able for a coming fruit crop in Ore gon. All kinds of fruit trees will blossom out later this year than last, reducing the danger from frosts and cold weather. Trees as a rule are iu good condition, and fruit buds are abundant. More winter spraying has been done than ever before, aud it is probable that there will be a similar increase in summerspraying. The chances for favorable weather during the time of blossoming are good, as there is but little snow 011 the mountains, The present outlook is good, there fore, for a large crop of fruit of good quality.
