THE BOOTILKELLY CO.
Heaviest Lumber Shippers in Ore
gon. 'file Columbia River and Oregon
Timbermau, published at Portland,
has tlie following in its issue for
January concerning the Uooth
Kelly Company, Lane county's
great lumber firm:
In 1897, Messrs. J. 1?. Kelly, G.
II. Kelly. J. II. llooth and R. A.
Hooth entered into a contract with
J. f. Jones, whereby they leased
the premises now widely known as
the Saginaw mills, in Lane county,
Oregon. In the agreement re
ferred to an option was given the
lessees to purchase the premises,

the above named gentlemen became
the owners of the property named.

they added to their capital a suffi
cient amount to make the total in
vestment $50,000 and incorporated
1 under the title of The Booth-Kelly
I Lumber Company. Immediately
' thereafter they added to their hold
.ings of timber lands in that vicinity
; and erected a second saw mill, giv
ing them a total capacity of 100,000
i feet for each ten hours run. They
I also added a dry kiln and additional
j planing machinery and, in various
I ways, increased tl. fr shipping
1 facilities and became acuye in the
lumber market, extending
their
sales to various parts of the country,
This was their introduction to the

all of the gentlemen had been for
merly operating in soft pine in the
southern part of Oregon, in which
In 1898 the capital of the com
pany was increased to $250,000 and
additional timber lands were se
cured; in 1899 their capital was
again increased to $1,000,000 and,
on the 14th of December last, an
other quarter of a million was added
j to their capital, wiucn now gives
j them a total paid-up capital of $r.-
250,000. During all of this period
they have been active in buying
timber lands until they perhaps now
have the largest holdings of timber
lauds of any one in the state. Their
lands have been carefully cruised
by members of the firm all un
desirable claims being excluded
trom their holdings.
In 189S the company leased the
Cobrug mill propertyat Coburg,
belonging to J. C. Goodale, the
lease provided for an option to pur
chase; in 1S98 the option was closed
and the property taken over; the
mill was rebuilt, a standard dry
Uilu added as, also, a new planing
mill and storage sheds and addi
tional lands were purchased for
lumberyards and mill ponds, until
now the Coburg plant is one of the
neatest and best equipped in the
state.
In the early part of 1898, the
company entered into negotiations
with the Southern Pacific Company j
for the purpose ol having a railroad
line from Springfield to their lands
on the Mohnwk river. A few)
months thereafter construction of
this line began and has "since been j
completed, the terminus being at a
place named Weudling, where the
company have now in operation a
miU that is conceded to be the most
economical producer and best
equipped of any in the country.
Extensive lumber yards are laid out
on these-premises; double standard
dry kilnsare in operation and one
of the- finest planing mills to be
found' anywhere. The company
are now' erecting a storage shed of
2,000,000 capacity for holding their
kiln-dried lumbar.
At this time the company are the
heaviest shippers iii the stc, pro-
per hour, thtir tnilli are ail o vr
ating. It will be seen, ly tin
statement that they can easily ship
half-million feet daily by running
full time, or twenty hours daily.
They carry good stocks of lumber
on hand and have a storage ca
pacity in their sheds for 5,000,000
feet of dressed material:
The company are making a
specialty of rush orders and long
timbers and have recently filled
orders for sticks 36 by 36 inches
for foreign shipment and arc send
ing out many sticks from 70 to no
feet long, ranging in sizes from 12
by 12 to 20 by 30 inches, some of
these sticks containing as much as
5000 feet.
No lumber concern in the country
has grown as, rapidly as the Booth-

manufacturing and great care is
taken in the filling of the orders.
It is said that whoever once deals
with this firm are always their
friends, as they are extremely care
ful that .their patrons should be
satisfied.

The legislature of 1899 and the
present session have adopted a
resolution in favor of the proposed
constitutional amendment, it was
necessary to. prepare its way for
submission to the people as re

the final vote under suspension of

of accepting or rejecting the initi
