    OIL, IN OREGON.
John Angel has just returned
from a prospecting tVip in Southern
Oregon nnd Northern California.
He spent sometime in that country,
and 1ms a good opinion or the
future of the district both from the
standpoint of a miner, snd also
that of a farmer. lie says that
people are boring for oil wells, and
expect to strike something rich.
"In Northern California and
Southern Oregon," said Mr. Angel,
"there is much prospecting going
on, although in a quiet way, for
oil wells. Much land has been
leased by oil speculators, and one
well is being bored at the present
time. They have gone through
one strata of simd. and the pros
pects are favorable that a strike will
be made. The oil is of a paraphine
base, which makes it good for re
fining, whereas milch of the oil
around L,os Angeles is of an
asphalt base, and can be used only
for fuel. The formation of the
land is good, and the hole which
js being made tor tue well now
going down is ni inches in the
clear.
"Oil experts who have looked
into the matter tell me that the
bieeest strike will be made in
Eastern Oregon and Washington,
east of the Cascade Range. People
are quietly locating on much of
the best land and these experts pre
diet that within a short time the
world will be startled with the
news that will come from that
section of the United States. These
experts gain their knowledge of
the presence of oil by the formation
of the land and one of them told me
that in three or four years Eastern
Oregon and Washington would be
producing millions and millions of
barrels of oil. Telegram.

The free rural mail delivery sys

the country, much to the con
venience and benefit of the farming
communities. In Oregon many
new rural delivery routes have
been established, and applications
have, been made for many more
The routes where ever established
have given perfect satisfaction, and
several new routes have been asked

the exception of R. P. Neil, who
was elected mayor, he being
democrat, although he was on both
tickets- On the question oi saloon
license, 436 votes were cast, 216
against license and 197 for, giving
the anti-saloon people a majority of
19 against the issuance of license

have elected a council that will en
force the wish of the people and
close up the saloons.

A GOOD OMEN.
Some of our exchanges seem to
be taking it to heart because while
the gain in the population of Ore
gon during the past to years is
nearly 100,000 yet at the same time
some of the towns show a decrease
in population for the same period.
We believe this is a good omen. It
shows that not only is the rural dis
tricts filling up rapidly with new
coiners but that many who have re
sided in town but are betleradnpted
to agricultural pursuits are going
back to the country.
The spirit of systematized, in
tensified, scientific fnrmingis abroad
throughout the whole land ana me.
OKI Kill VI tiisiuiij; tu uic wii-
gested centers to live is going out
of date. This fact seems potent all
over the Union as shown by the
last census, and it is no where more
evident than in Oregon. These
conditions are better for the state
of Oregon than many would sup
pose for the substantial growth tf
any state with as varied resources
as we possess has success in agri
culture as the basis of its prosperity.
