Drain is a qttccr little city: No
saloons, no police, and two ol the
best country hotels in the state.
There is one business avenue
still open to Bryan which would no
doubt be quite remunerative. He
might go into the patent medicine
business. It would give him al
most as good an opportunity to use
his automatic talking machine as
campaign work.
A steel bridge across the Coast
Fork at this place would be
stroke of good diplomacy on the
nart of the county court. The old
bridge is well nigh worn out and
some of these days it will drop into
the stream. At the present time,
it is unsafe to haul heavy engines
oven
It would be a splendid idea to
establish a curfew ordinance in
Cottage Grove, without wishing to
be hard or to reflect upon the ris
ing generation, it becomes neces
sary to state that there is an ele
ment here that needs prompt at
tention along this line. At S
o'clock each evening every boy
and girl under 18 years, should be
compelled to co home, in order
ttat some of them may at least
assume a virtue.

it is doubly dangerous. It is com

xi petition was circulated upon

sentenced from Douglas county
convicted of the crime of assault
and rape upon Winnie Thorn. The
petition was quite libarally signed
This is as it should be and Gov
ernor Geer should pardon the
youth, for the reason that his asso
date, and according to testimony,
the guiltiest of ths two, was let
. go scott free. Patterson is

doubt guilty of the charges, it can
not be successfully denied .that
Harvey was not equally as guilty
and on thisgrotind his friends claim
that he has suffered enough.
No one has ever been guilty of
saying that the Oregonian has
13ooth among its editorial -writers
but it did publish last Sunday one
of the most nonsensical criticisms
of the great aclor as has been writ
ten. The writer, if old enough to
remember Booth, the greatest ac
tor of his time, was evidently too
cowardly to write adversely of him
then, but waits until time drags
the reading public away from the
man and his great acts before he
attempts to offer his pent-up criti
cism. On the other jiand if he
were too young to know Booth in his
Iiey-day years, he proves himself a
knave, in that he writes of some
thing he knows not of. There is
little difference between a coward
and a knave anyway, and some
times both terms are applicable.
