The following letter from one of
our Oregon boys in the field on
Luzon Island has just been , re
ceived and will be read with in
terest by the relatives and friends
of the bravo boys who are up
holding the honor of our flag in
those lar-away islands of the Pa
cific. A postscript to the letter
says that the boys hope to start for
home soon:

have just got back from a sharp
fight out in the bills. I will try to
describe it the best possible. Right
after noon" today the colonel com
manding 27th U. S. V. rang" up
through the phone and called for
Captain Brandle (commanding at
Mariquina) and stated that they
were attacked at San Mateo by In
surgents, about 1500 strong, and
were driving the googoos back;
Captain Brandle, turning away
from the phone, called the bugler
and ordered him to blow call to
arms. Of course we fell in quickly

line, picked out the sick and lame,
land told them to remain behind;
the rest of us, forty in number,
I made a forced march to the hills
I We arrived at the Nunker river and
crossed. After we had gone about

enemy poured in a galling fire. We

They saw we had captured a canon
and Captain Sturgers of Company
C was wild with jealousy because
little Lieutenant Perkins had went
in ahead of him with forty men and
done wdint he (the captain) could
not do with ico men. Ut course
we were pleased with our capture
There followed on our way back
such shouts' as: "He's all right."
"Who's all right?" "Lieutenant
Perkins." "Three cheers for Lieu
tenant Perkins."

I will finish my letter. Times
are getting pretty hot around here
uow.v Not two miles some part of
the 27th are fighting every day aud
twice on Sunday. We have our
captured canon mounted on the
parade ground, all shined up and
looks fine. Yesterday a detail of
twelve men captured Lieutenant
General Santos of Geranomo's
staff. We are naturally a little
proud of our work of late. Well I
am on guard so will liave to bring
my letter to a close, so Adios.

Interesting Batch of News
From Our Bohemia Correspondent.
Every body talking politics.
Another sale of property this
week, the Sweepstake group,
Knowles& Gettyz having sold to
Mr. Brund of Point Terrace. The
Sweepstake is a good property,
situated on Elephant Mountain.
We wish Mr. Brund success in. his
new venture.
Messrs. Stocks, Harlow & Brush
are pounding out the precious metal
in goodly amounts with their 5
stamp mill. They are not milling
the best of their ore, but are going
to ship a car load to Denver in the
near future.
I. H. Bingham and others have
started up the Champion. This
mine has been shut down for
some time, but with proper man
agement will be a source of revenue
to its managers. ,
Notwithstanding the present de
pression in mining circles, there has
been more good strikes than was
ever before known in the history of
the camp. Notably among them
is the great Stocks & Harlow and
J. M. Peterson & Klucky. TIiih is
as good as the best, but little
spoken of. Potts & Brush have a
fine ledge ot free milling ore, but
the) know what they have. The
writer also knows it to be fabulously
rich.
Zinaker & Graber have a fine
large body running as high us $129
per ton. This mine, says an Eng
lish expert, is not worth locts, but
there is enough of this ore in sight
to ship a car load a week for 12
months.
William Shane over on Monte
Rico Ridge has opened up a fine
ledge of the finest of smelting ore to
be seen in camp, but still the citi
zens of Cottage Grove says "Let
the prospector develop his claim
and show up something, then a
smelter will be built." Let me say
right here that there is no better
way for him to develop his claim
than to furnish him a market for
his product. There is ore enough
now in Bohemia to keep a 50-ton
smelter ill operation for 2 years
without any more development and
mining men come here and see
this, but some of the class who
come and see begin to lay deep
schemes to get hold of the property
for nothing aud try to kill and do
kill everything for their own selfish
gains. But mining has now passed
the experimental stage and has be
come a grim reality and the days of
sharks and gamblers are about
numbered.
