STOCK AND FARM.
The family cow is an institution
by herself. Not only is she with
out a peer as an aid in support and
in providing luxuries not attainable
otherwise, but she is an educator.
Note the family of boys and girls
brought up with and taught to
care for a cow. There will not be
a dunce in the gang. Each one
anticipates the proud day when he
or she will be old enough to learn
to milk. All become impressed
early with the discipliu required in
taking the best care of the cow
Only by system, thoitghtfulness
jijntleness, regularity, will the cow
be induced to do her best for the
little bossy and at the pail, and so
for the family. All these char
acleristics are essential in the life
that would achieve success. Their
early inculcation is as needful as
food. Thit'k you that boy can ever
become a dude who must remem
ber to tether or drive the cow to
pasture, remember to milk her and
carefully strain the milk, remember
to give her water or grain and re
member to cease his frolic and
lower his voice when attending to
Clover's needs? He is in a fair
way to make a gentleman. And
many a happy family has found
one cow inadeauate, while two
grew to three, four six, ten, almost
before anybody was aware, and
the troupe grew into an honorable
and satisfactory business without
even the humiliation of soliciting a
position. Rah! for the family
cow! Farm Journal. .

CARK OV TIGS.
The critical period in a pig's life
is when it is deprived ot the
mother's milk; and how to furnish
a substitute for it is a problem
often difficult to solve. It is reas
onable to say that the growth of
pigs while nursing a vigorous,
healthy, well fed sow, and the mil
form development of flesh, muscle
and bone can scarcely be main
tained when nature's food is with
drawn. But every observing feeder
knows that pigs receive their milk
warm and often, and that their di
gestive powers are never overtaxed ,
and it is failure to observe this that
often makes the weaning period an
unlucky one, says the "Farm, Stock
and home." It is good economy
to feed the sow freelv during the
nursing period, even if it does seem
wasteful to feed so much for the
little milk she gives; but it must be
remembered that it is the whole
litter that is being fed, and when
they are 4 to 5 weeks old they need
a deal of it. But the feed must be
of a quality and quantity that will
not cause derangements of the
bowels of the little ones. Such
things are better prevented than
cured. Feed three times a day.jit
regular hours, and just enough,
having none left in the trough, and
yet have the appetite satisfied. This
requires observation, but it is neces
sary to success. Where lorn feeds
today, Dick tomorrow and Harry
next day, neither knowing nor car
ing about quantity, pig feeding is a
lottery and blanks are often drawn.
THE BRAVERY OF WOMAN
Was grandly shown by Mrs. fohn
Dowling of Butler. Pa., in a three years'
struggle with a malignant stomach
trouble that caused distressing attack
of nausea and indigestion. All remedies
failed to relieve her until she tried Elec
tric Bitters. After taking it two months,
she wrote: '"I am now wholly cured
and can eat anything. It ii truly a
grand tonic for the whole system as I
gained in weight and feel much stronger
since using it." It aids digestion, cures
dyspepsia, improves appetite, gives new
life. Only 50c. Guaranteed, at Benson
Drug Co., drug store.
