By tier of keep or Councilmkn. TAKE THE NUGGET. Mrs E V Smith returned from Ashland Friday, where she has been in attendance at her father's bedside. Saturday word was re ceived of his death. Mr Robinson is building an ad dition to his house. Deputy County Surveyor Hunt was up here Wednesday and Thursday surveying part of this country. Everybody is burning slashings and thick columns of smoke are rising making the air stifling. James Tapp returned from Cres- well Sunday. Mr Bunch's sister from California is visiting here. Notwithstanding that few mills have been in operation in tho district this seanon, tho condition of affairs in point of development and rich strikes, are tho best in tho history of the camp. Property owners seem to be getting down to tho realization that the only way to make their property attractive is to get in and bring it to tho front, and this can only be done through the medium of systematic development. At the Helena things present a lively appearance. The new cook Iioush 1b now completed and the new bunk house will be finished this week. On Helena., No. 2 a largo foice of men are at work on development work, driving two tunnels, which aro developing splendid prospects. The upper one is in 75 feet while tho other one which is 160 feet below is in 30 feet. The StoiJks and Harlow property is booming, on account of the mammoth strike recently made of which mention has already been made. The tunnel ia now in 100 feet nnd the strike was made at n depth of 33 feet. At 20 feet tho pay streak was only a fow incites wide but it has now developed to three feet wide and has shown no signs of a decrease in richness. The other day one of the boys who was suffering from a bruised foot took it into his head to put in tho day panning, nd the result of his day's labor was estimated at something over (200. At present the mill is not running but everything is being done to get tho property and mill into splendid shape, with plenty of ore on the dump for a long winter's run. Supplies of all kinds are being hauled in and this winter the boys will make a run that will be a record breaker. O. P. Adams of the Ophir has completed his assessment work and roturned to Cottage Grove this week. Mr. Adams is well pleased with the way the Ophlr claim has acted this season, and shows some excellent samples of lead ore which he took Jrom the floor of the Ophir claim. The claim in question is said to be on the same vein as the Musick'u great base proposition, and tho samples shown by Mr. Adams resemble those of the Musick very much, and as depth is gained, the piospcets arc all the more encouraging. Fingal Hirds of the Glenwood property reports his property behaving in a splendid manner this year, and the ore uncovered is of a character that lends encouragement to any miner. STXIAY NOTES. Last week the United States circuit court at San Francisco decided that min ng locations cannot be made upoh railroad patented land, whether tho same carries mineral or not. The question was raised in a suit brought by the Iron Mountain Co. of Shasta county, California, subject to several miners who had located us mining claims land purchased from the railroad company. The court held that the title was in the Iron Mountain Co. Oregon Mining Journal. Expert miners now claim that there Is $100,000 in gold in sight on tho Lawrence ledge of the Nye mine. This is the property on Galls Creek where H. B. Nye recently made his great strike. Many predict that it will prove to be the bonanza mine of the locality and it certainly shows substantial evidence of what is claimed for it, and the full extent of the ledge has not yet been deternjinedt There is a good force of men at work on the property engaged in development work as the proprietors desire to ascertain the extent of the ledge that they may be governed in the purchase of machinery and construction of tho plant to handle the product of the mine. Tidings. It is well for mining men to bear in mind that mining districts have not the power to legally make rules defining the number of days work necessary to bo done on a claim to comply with section 2324, revised statutes of tho United Statef, which prescribes that "not less than flOO worth of labor shall be per formed, or improvements made during each year, it is accepted by many that to a day mny be charged for a day's labor of a man doing assessment work on a mininc claim and that twenty days work will tnus sutnee tor each claim. The going rate of wages for miners in any particular district, whether that rnto bo $2.50 or $15 per day, determines the number of days necessary to do the annual assessment work on each claim, and any higher rnte of wages than the prevailing rate, is less than the required assessment work, and renders the claim or claims legally open to relocation. No district and no state has a right to promulgate rules or pass laws in contravention to this fact and the sooner this is accepted by interested parlies tho safer will their holdings be. Industry and Mining. THE BRAVERY OF WOMAN Was grandly shown by Mrs. John Dowling of Butler. Pa., in a threo years' struggle with n malignant stomach trouble that caused distressing attocks of nausea and indigestion. All remedies fulled to relieve her until sho triod Elec trio Bitters.
