" 'AH day she had watched her

mother's return, she fell asleep at

So died little Anna Cossio, aged 4
years, in New York City last week.
The awful heat, the close walls,

and a mother working to eke out a
miserable existence. The 4-year-old
doing the work of a nurse all
day, doing a woman's work in the
playtime of life. Yes; wages are
rising.
While recognizing the pathos o
labor, or to use the demagogue's
pet phrase, the "poor" against the
"rich." In cither phase it is
utterly contemptible and meaning

men whose very existence is a
grievance, the notes of which,

populistic or hybrid democratic,

An order was made sonic time
since, by the city marshal, request
ing that property owners drive the
nails down in their respective side
walks. Some of these days the
marshal will take his hammer nnd
go on a still hunt for those pro
truding nails, and do the job him
self, and then the property owner
will have a bill to pay to the city.
It would not take but a Jew
moment's for each property owner
to comply with the request of the
marshal, thus saving considerable
expense, and materially improving
the looks of the sidewalks.

followed Miss Gracie Lincoln with
a comic song entitled '.The Kid

well rendered and appreciated that
she received a rousing encore, and
gracefully responded by singing
the pathetic and beautiful song,
