Gold Mining In llritish Columbia.
The first authenticated discovery of
gold in British Columbia, according to
Dr. G. M. Daw6on, occurred at Mitch
ell or Gold Harbor, on tho west coast
of Queen Charlotte island, in 1851, a
nugget weighing several ounces having
been accidentally picked up "by an
Indian woman on tbo seashore. This
uupget wiib brought to Fort Simpson,
uud, coming into the possession of the
officer in charge of tho Hudson Bay
Company's post at that place, was for.
warded by him to tho company's head
quarters at Victoria. An expedition
was at once fitted out, and, proceeding
to tho spot, succeeded in locating a
quartz vein seven inches wide, "report
ed to contain 25 per cent gold in somo
places." Tho find was worked for
some months and then abandoned, the
narrow vein entirely giving out; n
ither indications of mineral were erei
found on tho island, notwithstanding
that this extraordinary littlo seam ol
quartz had yielded in a few weeks it
was worked a value of $20,000 on the
woid of one nathority, or $75,000 on
that of another. About the same time
coal, which had been discovered on
Vancouver island as far back as 1835,
began to be mined in earnest at Nanai
mo.
